Does your lesbian wife take on Mrs.?

If you're a lesbian and you get married are you both Mrs. and Mrs. or do you stay Miss?
I had a woman on the phone today who gave her wife's details as Mrs. so and so. I just want to know if that's what happens or this person was a man with a very feminine voice.
Thanks

In the rep. of Ireland (if your calls are exclusively national) same sex marriage is illegal and not recognised so. You'd be surprised, I knew a few lads with voices that would put women to shame they were so effiminate. But if you are dealing with other countries, the chance is alot higher that you were dealing with two Mrs.

They sell 'Mrs. & Mrs.' gay wedding cards in Asda. I think it's Mrs.

oh no I'm living in Glasgow so this was an English person I think, they had an Asian name though. So do they call themselves missus? Or is that just a man and wife thing? What do you think? What's the origin of the mrs. thing changing your name is it not about changing your surname and becoming the mans property? Which surname do the lesbians take? Is it that there is always one lesbian who wears the suit and the other wears the dress and the one in the suit gets to be the surname keeper? I'm sorry if this is all ignorant I really don't know how it works. I've seen a lesbian wedding but it was just the girls first names on the announcement thing.

It's probably like straight weddings, choose either surname, keep the same surname. They can both wear dresses (or suits)

I think that it's just up to the individuals.

You know, this is off-topic but almost-related.
In a heterosexual marriage, if the woman is taking the man's surname, when they have to sign their register, does she put her maiden name or her new surname?

At weddings, when the bride and groom go through usually to another room, they both have to sign... something I've always thought was the register... what is that, then?
And yeah - I figured it's your maiden name, but that part usually comes after "man and wife" doesn't it? maybe not. In which case, though, there must be a peroid where (in religious ceremonies) you're married in the eyes of God but not by law... Maybe I'm just getting mixed up. Haven't been to a wedding in a while.

well, thats why i edited, i thought maybe i was mistaken and it means something different in the states?
i am not sure what you are describing, perhaps it is a register there? but what a register would be in the states...i dont know if you sign that yourself? i thought it was just for guests to sign?

Oh, no, that measn something different here, I guess. What I mean is the bit where I guess whoever conducts your wedding and your witnesses sign - sort of the official document. I think we call it a register over here, but I could be wrong.
I hope you don't think I was being bitchy, by the way - I didn't mean to be if I came across that way - I'm just trying to explain something I have pretty much no knowledge of, so just rambling.

I think in the US it's a marriage license. It's usually done before the ceremony.
