Control: Filming for Ian Curtis movie begins.

As far as I can remember we had a thread about it pre-hack. So the filming has finally started!

Quote:
Sure to excite (or enrage) many a disaffected, morose fan, filming for Control, the long-awaited movie about Joy Division's late frontman, Ian Curtis, began this week. Directed by veteran music video director and photographer Anton Corbijn, the film focuses on the tumultuous last years of Curtis' life before he committed suicide in 1980, at the age of 23 and shortly before the band was to depart for its first American tour.

Control deals with Curtis' romantic conflicts with his wife, Deborah, and his mistress, Annik Honore, his increasingly debilitating epileptic seizures, and his performances with Joy Division. Filming will take place in the English towns of Nottingham and Macclesfield (where Curtis lived and is now buried). The film will be released in the UK by Momentum Pictures sometime in 2007.

The film is based upon and expands on the 1995 book Touching From a Distance written by Curtis' widow as a personal account of her life with the singer. Deborah Curtis serves as a co-producer on the film as well, along with Factory Records founder Tony Wilson. Matt Greenhalgh wrote the script for Control, talking to those closest to Curtis, including Honore, who previously remained silent on her relationship with him.

Sam Riley, who played Mark E. Smith in 24 Hour Party People, stars as Curtis, Academy Award-nominated actress Samantha Morton plays Deborah Curtis, Alexandra Maria Lara is Honore, James Anthony Pearson is Joy Division/New Order guitarist Bernard Sumner, Joe Anderson is bassist Peter Hook, Harry Treadaway is drummer Stephen Morris, Toby Kebbell is Factory Records partner and Joy Division manager Rob Gretton, and Craig Parkinson is Wilson.

Longtime fan Corbijn has his own history with Joy Division. In 1979, he moved from Holland to the UK to photograph the band, resulting in this now-familiar image. He directed the posthumous video for "Atmosphere" in 1998. In a press release, Corbijn said, "If I only ever make one movie, CONTROL would have to be that. I simply feel that as Joy Division and Ian Curtis played a big part in my life, I cannot think of a better combination of subject and director."

But what's a film like this without a killer soundtrack? Not to worry, that will be more than taken care of. The soundtrack will include original tracks recorded by Warsaw (the band's previous incarnation before becoming Joy Division) and Joy Division from the late 1970s and early 80s. New Order will compose the score for the film. Other featured acts on the soundtrack are David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, and the Buzzcocks.

I can't wait to see this.
I've always wondered what Annik Honore was like. I read in some music magazine (Mojo or Uncut, can't remember which) that a book was going to be published with Ian's letters to her. I've only heard that she was very glamorous and demanding...the soundtrack sounds ace as well. Although I think Sean Harris should be the ONLY Ian Curtis...

What is the book like? If his widow wrote it it must be written with a tinge of bitterness.

And I do hope this movie is good. I hope it isn't like a Velvet Goldmine where the only thing valuable was the soundtrack. Many musc movies suffer that fate.

It is a bit bitter in some parts, understandably. I think Deborah doubts Ian actually had epilepsy, because he would have fits whenever he was in an undesirable situation. You can't blame her for being kind of pissed, though.

Oh, hey, if my husband committed suicide and he had been cheating on me previously, you better believe I wouldn't leave out the bits where he was the world's biggest asshole. If anyone would have a truthful account of him it'd be her.

I think some people were pissed off by her account, but if people wanted a "biography" from her, they had better expect the truth - he was a womanizing drug-user, and one of the greatest figures of the post-punk era. I always wondered what Annik's side of the story was, there are a lot of Internet rumors/conspiracies about her, which is silly since no one has ever heard her account of what happened. Maybe it's best if we never find out, though.

By her own admission, Deborah's devotion to Ian, her willingness to conform to his stringent behavioural code, was extreme. Even in the early days of their courtship he would, for example, insist that she spent her lunch break at his parents' house. "It was ridiculous! I only had an hour for lunch and it would've been 15 minutes' walk to his parents' house and 15 minutes back, and it sort of shortened my lunch hour." She gives a birdish little laugh. "And I gave up my studies ridiculously readily. It was pathetic. You know, he said, 'Leave school, you won't need your A-levels, you won't need a job. You won't have to work, I'm going to make so much money, we're going to have a great life together, just leave school and then we can get married and then we can start - start our life, really." She pauses, her hands folded in her lap, and sits very still. "Looking back on it now I think, 'What were you doing? What were you thinking of?'"
To me this now this seems ridiculous...but I can't imagine being involved with a person that just has that...I don't know, presence, spark, whatever. I need to read her book.

I just ordered a book on Amazon.com called Torn Apart: The Life of Ian Curtis co-authored by Lindsay Reade (Tony Wilson's ex-wife). Apparently it has some excerpts of letters from Ian to Annik. The only problem: it ships in 2 to 5 weeks. But I'll definitely put a book review up! I am a huge Joy Division fan, I love Deborah's book but am massively curious as to the contents of this book...

I really felt for her when she said that she doesn't listen to Joy Division anymore because she'd just sit there and listen all the way through. Strangely enough, it makes me more sympathetic to what Courtney must have gone through with Kurt. I mean, I dismiss her so easily because she is just such an attention seeking whore, but I assume she has feelings. Imagine being in love with a person like Kurt or Ian Curtis.

Unfortunately Deborah has had a few weird fans say bad shit about her, even though obviously they didn't have their husband/father of their child cheat on them with a Belgian journalist and fling it in their faces. It MUST be annoying for her, she seems so cool and very normal, not into the whole showbiz thing.

That's exactly what I got from her in that interview. I obviously don't know much else. I tend to stay away from people's biographies when I get into their music. I tend to get disillusioned with them as people. The rockstar appeal is much stronger.

It seems that the women behind the men tend to get all the shit. God forbid the rock messiahs are assholes and hold most, if not all the blame. She seems to have enough distance between her and what has happened. Her collaboration in this movie can only enhance it. I hope so anyway.

At first I was excited about the film. The I considered that the portrayal of a character as complex as Ian's is a task that few are worthy of undertaking. I doubt that this Sam Riley fellow can match up to Sean Harris' performance in 24 Hour Party People (which was admirable to say the least, he did a particularly brilliant job chanelling Ian's stage presense). In either case, I couldn't help but feel "sad" in a sense, that Ian was being portrayed by someone other than Ian. Biopic portrayals usually dissapoint, but a fuck-up of Ian Curtis would hit me particularly hard. I'm afraid that the public will get a skewered impression of Ian, and the Joy Division fanbase will become monopolised by people who don't appreciate the music properly. Don't get me wrong, the popularity of a band doesn't effect my opinion of them at all, it annoys me greatly when people see appeal in music on the basis of it's "obscurity". That's not to say that Joy Division are obscure, but I have such a connection with them that I would feel...raped if they became idols for legions of people who don't appreicate their music like I do. I feel selfish for harbouring these sentiments, and I'm fully aware I'm in no position to determine whether someone can appreciate music properly or not. I'd love to be able to say I want everyone to hear Joy Division and spread the magic around. Underneath it all, I probably just want Joy Division all to myself, and I'll have to learn to overcome my possesiveness when it comes to certain art forms. I eagerly anticipate observing Annik's rendition of events, and I'm confident that the biopic wont be an entirely biased account as people from all aspects of Ian's life are involved in making the film. I shall probably have to travel to see it in cinema, as I doubt it will make it into my local screenings. Ah well, I can make a little day out of it .

Deborah definitely makes Ian come across like a raging asshole in the book...it sounds like they got married too young and then she got pregnant, so she was just trapped in the relationship.

the soundtrack seems good so far!

I'm excited that New Order is composing the score.

I should watch 24 Hour Party People again because I completely forget who everyone in that film was.

When there's David Bowie, there's David Bowie-rip off era Lou Reed.

Oh, by the way, Samantha Morton? I think I just came, shat, and pissed my pants at the same time.
