| Ok I admit it. I hate most Gus VanSant movies. God just saying that makes me feel like an asshole. My Own Private Idaho is one of my favorite movies of all time, so that one doesn't count. I don't really have anything negative to say about that movie.
I also loved To Die For and Good Will Hunting. Drugstore Cowboy envokes no emotions in me whatsoever. It's just a movie. Somethign to do to kill time on a rainy Saturday morning when I have a hangover.
I thought Elephant was eehhhh okay at best. Even cowgirls get the blues was really lame, but that's mostly tom robbin's fault. I love Uma Thurman and Rain Phoenix of course, but a chick with really ****ing long thumbs going to some lesbianish cowgirl ranch? uhhhh...sure.
My problem with him is not the scripts or the dialogue (although it does seem that with every other movie he makes there is virtually NO dialogue), but the way he shoots. Last Days is an excellent example of what I'm talking about. The lllllllllllllooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggg gggggg shots... the camera pulling back slowly from the window for what feels like 8-10 minutes, the shots of "kurt" walking around in the woods, or just sitting in the house watching a boyz II men video.
In Elephant, it's as if he just walked in to a school with a handheld camera and quietly video taped what the kids were doing. It was so unstructured or something. That was probably the point, to make the viewer feel like a voyeur, just watching these kids at school. Last Days didn't feel like a movie, it felt like I was watching a security tape of a guy hanging around his house. It may as well been a silent film.
His Psycho remake was a shot by shot remake of the original. I liked that it was in color, but I HATED the casting of Anne Heche. What hte hell was that all about? I thought she sucked. Gerry was awful. Finding Forrester was boring.
That's all of his work that I've seen. I don't mean to be an insulting ***** to the Van Sant fans around here.
Argue with me though..... why do you love him?
What's so great about Gus Van Sant?
I really want to love his movies but I don't. |
