The Lost Weekend is so good, or maybe it's just Ray Milland who's great. Days of Wine and Roses is not as subtle or well-crafted, but then it's Blake Edwards and not Billy Wilder-- that's probably unfair though.
nuits somnambules, I almost typed "Thin Man Series" but really my favorite is that one, and 2nd is probably the first film.
A b/w movie I feel I should make a point of seeing is Nanook of the North, has anyone here seen it? It's supposed to be the first documentary film (I think). |

| | | you should definately watch some of greta garbo's silents. that womans face is unlike any persons ever. she is just as brilliant in her talkies as in her silents. i recommend love (her first anna karenina) and the kiss
the first of the talkies were gorgeous. the art deco settings, the satin gowns, the checkbones, the emotion.. they don't translate in colour, but in b/w :swoon:
and lest we forget the hitchcocks. film noir or the original horror movies. its scarier in b/w
you must see some of busby berkeley's work and shanghai express starring dietrich

| | | 2 new ones for me:
My Night at Maud's (Eric Rohmer, 1970)
I Know Where I'm Going! (Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger, 1945)
The 2nd really won me over with the beautiful cinematography combined with the wild, beautiful Scottish Hebrides setting... |

| | | Paper Moon is a favorite. I just watched Darling a few weeks ago - love it. I watched All About Eve (again) a couple days ago. Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf is overdue for a repeat. One of the best theatre experiences I've had was A Touch of Evil. |

| | | My favourite "modern" black and white movie is Ed Wood - I'd take it over Schindler's List any day.
On a separate note, has anybody mentioned "The Last Picture Show"? I don't believe so, but it's an amazing film. The conclusive proof that Cybill Shepherd can act, a little, when pushed. From behind. By Peter Bogdanovich.

| | | Considering that I'm mainly in love with really old movies, such as silents and early movies through the 40's...I'm in love with black and white.
One of my favorite b&w movies is The Philadelphia Story and also perhaps Casablanca.
Most early b&w movies were shot on Nitrate film stock, which made them look very wonderful and shimmery...but also made them very susceptible to fires and thus a lot of early b&w movies are lost forever as a result of accidental and/or purpose burning.
The film was also very fragile and had a tendency to melt...so we're very lucky to have a lot of the early films that we have. |

I prefer earlier Hitchcock to his later more popular stuff...it wasn't as glossy and it seemed "fresher" to me, such as The Lady Vanishes and The 39 Steps.
Greta Garbo is absolutely wonderful. I love the German version of "Anna Christie" and her performance in Grand Hotel made me cry.
I also love early RKO musicals, they are wonderful examples of b&w movies...especially Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies...but also things such as the Goldiggers series.
OK I'll shut up now. |

| | | Another new one for me:
The Good Fairy (1935, William Wyler)
This was totally adorable and made me realize why Margaret Sullavan was considered so special... She's an innocent plucked out of an orphanage to be a "glamorous usherette" in a movie palace, before she's sent into the world the directrice reminds her to do one good deed per day and that gets her into trouble with a rich man who wants her and a poor, clueless, stuffy lawyer. |
