| | | goodbye lenin!
in german with english subtitles. one of my favourite films ever. hilarious and sad and touching and a coming of age movie all at the same time. plus i love 20th century history so the post-cold war setting and the way in which different characters adapted to the new germany made it all the more interesting. |

ive been watching a load of foreign movies lately, mostly spanish and french. and a couple of british. too bad some films are only on region2 dvd. i had to watch 'la haine' on vhs. a black and white film on vhs looks like MUD traveling down your screen |

| | 2046 - Really makes you think, its like this complicated story of this man who writes storys failing at love. Takes a few times of watching it to really appreciated it (In the Mood for Love is also good, more simpler!) House of Flying Daggers - Oh wow I adore this film, Zhang Ziyi is bliss. Its like a Romeo & Juliet film sort of but with opposing gangs with daggers Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - Without a doubt my joint favourite film (Other being Girl Interrupted, but thats not foreign), its the most fantastic tale of a few different storys revolving around eachother, and visually its spectacular. Spirited Away - A very cool animated film which makes you feel that you want to be 9 yrs old again! Very complicated to explain if you havent seen it, its just good - go buy it! |

| | | Eh...I hate the way anything film outside h'wood is suddenly "foreign".
But anyways, I'm a lover of Pedro almodovar films. I would recommend Bad Education to people new to his films, as it is his most recent (excluding Volver - yet to be released).
Or, if you dont like gay sex *cough*, then I say watch Live Flesh - it's one of the less risque of his films but it's got a lot of plot twists to keep you griped.
Tie Me up, Tie Me Down is classic Almodovar - a bizzare love story that should just not work but it does; you'll also see Antonio Bandres before he went all hollywood/sold-out/shit.
My favourite of his work has to be What Have I Done To Deserve This?
Almodovar aside, I love Amores Perros. It's one of the best movies I've ever seen.
If you want an English "foreign" film, then I say watch 60s classic The Servant.
And who could forget Amelie - yes, it has a fuck load of hype around it but I think it's warranted. It's a great and unique movie. Plus, Audrey Tautou is a great actress (she's also very good in Dirty Pretty Things) |
