Interesting...
I just found this Enter Roth’s new feature, Hostel. Inspired by a Web site found by Ain’t It Cool News’ Harry Knowles, the film brings one of the most terrifying things Roth has ever seen to the big screen. Told through the fictional world of the movie’s main characters Paxton and Josh, Hostel delves into Knowles’ late night discovery, a Web site advertising a business in Thailand where it’s not only legal to torture and murder innocent people--individuals can profit from it.
The concept? For $10,000, anyone can be escorted to a room, handed a loaded gun and offered another human being to kill. The reason the gruesome concept is supposedly legal is because the victims participating in it are doing so at their own free will. Apparently, the poverty-stricken individuals are sacrificing their own lives so that their families will have enough money to survive.
Since production on Hostel began, there’s been a constant debate on whether or not the place in Thailand actually exists. Whether or not the above scenario is in fact true, though, isn’t the point, says Roth. The fact remains that, “someone conceptualized this. Someone out there is so numb to drugs and hookers that they created this Web site, and this Web site is real. Whether or not there’s an actual place, I don’t know, but that doesn’t really matter.”
Roth admits that in the beginning he was so intrigued by the Web site he was actually thinking about doing a documentary exposing the place if it did indeed exist, but then realized he could be putting his own life in jeopardy when dealing with such sick individuals. So instead he teamed up with independent film king Quentin Tarantino and used the idea behind the Web site to tell the fictional story of two American college buddies who discover a horrifying hostel in an out-of-the-way Slovakian town.
