Didn't like Blair Witch either, so I'm guessing I'll pass.
As far as the what you don't see aspect and build up, the first part of the original Amityville Horror is probably the movie that did that best for me.
Missy with her imaginary friend, strange smells, the rocking chair, even a cat jumping on the window sill. Still not much until Kathy decides to go shut the window. You're thinking she'll just go do that, patronize her daughter a bit more about her imaginary friend, and put her to bed....
BAM! Red eyes looking back at her from outside. Jumped like fuck first time I saw that scene.
