| | | Mad Men I am surprised I haven't seen a thread for this show.
So everyone thinks it's amazing and all of that. Which is TRUE. SO GOOD.
But I actually want to talk about individual characters. Let's do a bit of character analysis.
I'll start.
This woman has the body I'd love to have. I don't think her body shape would be as beloved as it is on this show, but it is something. I think at first I was somewhat at odds with what Joan tried to teach the girls. Things like, don't cry in the break room, be careful who you end up sleeping with in the office, dress appropriately, etc. The more we've gotten to know her though, the more I feel as if she feels protective of her girls. In the last few episodes of season 2, her character was really revealed by the writers. She excels at helping Harry at his job by reading scripts and selling ad time. She is a perfect secretary to Don. She tries to be the perfect fiance to that doctor. I started to see similarities between her and Peggy, but they almost died instantly, particularly when Harry doesn't even consider her for that job he is paying that kid to do for $150 a week. How much does Joan make? Like $40 a week maybe? That was an error by Harry. But perhaps Joan also doesn't show overt interest in switching jobs, even if she might desire that. If you'll remember, Peggy was staying overtime to work on that Belle Joliet lipstick campaign to the point where Joan and Don had to tell her to go home or to stop milking them for the dinner money or something like that.
All of this coupled with her engagement. Sterling wanted to tie her down, as well. Even with that beautiful scene where he brings in the birdcage. She didn't want to. I think she could have had him. It's apparent who he actually wants. But she wasn't ready to give up that freedom.
anyway...there's so much more...my hands are just tired now...

| | | I started watching on BBC 2 late at nights and became sort of addicted. They're reshowing it on BBC 4 with an accompanying documentary show about the 'real' mad men. I've only seen season 1 though.

Even when I got a few dvds I still watched it on my computer. I can't wait till I get a flatscreen to rewatch them.

| | | yeah see it just looks like it looks good to watch, i want to do it justice, cause i remember reading about how much effort went into the costuming and makeup and lighting and whatnot, so i think my incredibly dirty monitor might not do it justice. not that my incredibly dirty tv is any better, plus i can never get at the bloody thing, such is life living with 3 boys.
i also imagine everyone smokes all the time, so that sort of put me off watching it. lame, i know. |

| | Yeah. I watched this
There used to be threads about it? I remember posting in them.
I remember sort of giving out about the pacing - The story was pretty slow moving overall, and in season 2 they've slowed it down even more.
While I enjoy it, I would like it move faster.
Maybe not as fast as Sorkin wrote The West Wing, but faster than it was moving.
I also remeber someone posting also that they knew somone that worked in that era or somesuch?
And they said that the sexism etc was really much much worse than what the show portrays.
Which I guess ties in with what Pablita says about not considering Joan for the Job - I think the writers were showing that he paid the kid for the job because he didn't think a woman could do the job, even though, clearly, she could. |

| | | Yeah, the pace was a little bit difficult to get used to. Also, upon first glance, this show is just really about a bunch of guys and how they treat women. No major drama or strife. Yet the subtle behavioral details make the show so great to watch.
I'd like to see one of you try to tackle Don Draper. He just got so interesting at the end of season 2. Him and Betty.
Another thing is that if you are familiar with the history at this time, the show also gets even more interesting. The little historical anecdotes make it feel like a trivia show sometimes. My favorite bit of that was when Betty and Don were watching Jackie give a tour of the White House on Valentine's day. Then afterwards the housewives were talking about Jackie and Jack and how it looked like they were playing house...all of this while both of them were folding laundry.

| | | Love this show. I recently watched season 1 on DVD and I downloaded season 2 (half way through it).
Joan really is hot, and I went from disliking her to rooting for her. I felt so badly for her when Harry passed her up for the promotion. |

love charlie, it must be quite hard for him to review stuff at the moment given that his own show (dead set) was one of the best things on in ages.

| | | I really want to see this show!
but I'm terrible at committing to watching something on TV, I'm much better at buying a series on DVD and then devoting several consecutive hours to watching every episode. |
