In December 1999 the media covered the protests against the World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting in Seattle, but most people had no idea... Joe public didn't know how big the rallies were, or even what the 40,000 demonstrators were protesting. Most North Americans still have no idea what the WTO is doing to the world.

The protesters wanted to stop globalization which is the system of global free trade that's destroying both the environment, and indigenous cultures of the 3rd world in order to feed the unquenchable hunger of modern consumerism in the 1st world.

but i think we should all specify that the problem is not "globalization" (however we're going to define that), the problem is FREE TRADE as a specific set of guidelines and rules which give a bad bad name to an overall good concept (international trade).
