| | | Hmm.... I'm dubious. Later Red Dwarf was, frankly, a pile of smeg.

| | | To be honest, apart from the first two series, the show hasn't really aged very well. I suppose it's inevitable that the style would change, given how long it ran for, but there's way less rewatch potential as it goes on.
That said, I will probably watch this. |

| | | Funny, I saw the 'Terrorform' episode (from series V) at my dad's last week and I was thinking the same. The delivery was so slow and cheesy, despite not remembering any of it it barely raised a laugh. I think sitcoms have come a long way in the past 15 years.

| | | Well yeah. Even Father Ted seems a bit clunky these days. The sucky thing is though, I can't think of anything from the UK since that's been much better, faster, wittier or whatever. So I don't know when my expectations got so high. |

| | | Peep Show? It's faster, subtler and there's no canned laughter. At least people have stopped pretending the british are untouchable at sitcoms now.
Edit: Spaced.

| | | Good point, Spaced was pretty much the antithesis of Red Dwarf's latter day "Blackadder in Space" format. I'd add the likes of BrassEye as well, and just the general move away from stuff that at least could be "recorded before a live studio audience". Of course, there's also the second wave of animated sitcoms as well. The fact that you can now have four or five jokes in the space of seconds would've been hard to imagine then. |

| | | I think The Simpsons is probably the most important show in terms of changing the pacing of sitcoms, obviously because of the animation it squeezes much more in and more thoughtfully, sometimes it burns up ideas in the first 5 minutes of the show that other series would spin to an entire episode. I think Arrested Development is the only thing that came close in live action.

| | | A new Red Dwarf, however bad it may be, is still likely to be significantly better than 99.9% of the dross gracing most modern TV channels. I remain cautiously optimistic.

| | | TBH, you're not alone: Red Dwarf VIII has the highest ratings of all of the series, pretty much because people wanted it to be good and there wasn't a huge amount else on. |
