modern horror = new slashers

I'm a pretty big slasher film fan, you know the cheesy, bloody, premarital sex filled horror movies from the 80s (friday the 13th, halloween, etc.) And since part of the appeal of movies like Friday the 13th are it's careless, bad quality (weak dialogue, bad effects) and it's just great for cheap thrills, wouldn't that make the modern horror films of today (the throw away ones, like Turistas, We All Scream for Ice Cream) sort of like the slashers of our generation?

I'm not saying this as a fact, just sort of a thought I had. My film teacher said that one of the reasons there are so many horror movies out all the time are simply because they're easy to make, it's easy to make something jump out and scare the audience.

I just feel like in maybe 20 years, the next generation will look back at the throwaway horror movies of today and think "awesome! gore! nudity! shitty acting! yeah!"

I'm pretty disgusted at the recent spate of movies (Saw Turistas, Feast etc) and i wouldnt equate them at all with old horror movies... I defo do agree with the term Torture-Porn for modern day horror films. Important horrors in the genre like Halloween and Psycho never had to show loads of blood and guts. Horror films maybe easy to make but Bloody good ones are hard to make.

i hope not. because back in the day, a movie was much more shocking and it was a lot harder to get a movie made and distributed. yeah, there were A LOT of horror movies back then, but a lot of them were more original with at least some of their concepts even if they were all slashers and the idea of that kind of horror was new.

and now every idiot with a camera can shoot anything, wrap it up and have released by Anchor Bay or the likes of. back in the day, there were better and more entertaining horror movies compared to the ones that were just too embarrassingly horrible to watch. and now those numbers have flipped. in order to find good horror of today, you have to go through tons of crap to get there.

that and critics aside, it's not just that the new generation of people appreciate the old horror films. when they all came out, they usually got a lot of positive attention despite how bad they were. now, if they're bad, most people will say so. that said, i really hope future generations will not appreciate today's crappy movies like we appreciate the ones from the 70's/80's/90's.

That's a good point.

Halloween may not have been the best example for me to choose, it has topped lists for genuine horror.

I guess I'm thinking of stuff like Friday the 13th, which is basically - you have sex, you get chopped up. And things like Hostel (ew) are sort of like that (though much more extreme I will say).

There are trash movies like Shutter, One Missed Call that no one will ever give a shit about in the future. But maybe stuff like The Grudge, even The Ring will go on to be random but bloody fun.

I think there are big differences between real horror/suspense and just plain gore.

Modern examples:
Real Horror - The Strangers
Plain Gore - Saw

Classic examples:
Real Horror - Rosemary's Baby
Plain Gore - Friday the 13th Franchise

Ya know what I mean? Because there are so many no name directors and actors in horror movies today, but you can tell the REAL suspense and thrillers when it's actors that are actually recognized.

Turistas?? Scream for Ice cream?? I don't know what you are talking about it.

All I know is that the slasher and horror films of the past decade have all been remakes from 60's and 70's films. And it seems that the coming movies are also remakes, so I really doubt 20 years from now we are going to be remembered as anything except the "trasch recycling generation with no identity" or something like that. I don't have a nickname, posers maybe?? I don't know.

The millenium's identity is the no identity.
