I love Tarantino's movies, but sometimes it seems like he is just copying something rather than giving an homage (Rodriguez definitely does it better, ex. Planet Terror). I will say that Reservoir Dogs is one of my favorite movies, as is Pulp Fiction.

I heard a "filmmaker" friend of mine give the same novelist speech about her work, I thought she was being a total cunt...but maybe she was on to something.

No, probably just a total cunt.

I can imagine, at various times, Quentin, Marilyn Manson and Damien Hirst like to sit in their respective lounges, stroke their chins (which is a more formidable undertaking for Quentin than the other two) and think "fuck I'm outrageous".

haha I know, I was being sarcastic, just referring to Tarantino's success.

Oh my god, it must take at least an hour to repeat the stroking motion back and forth on his chin. I don't know, as big of a douche he is I still enjoy him. I enjoy him in a way where I like his movie a lot, but do not take "him" as seriously as I do other directors when it comes to the stupid things he can say.

Death Proof was a disappointment. I usually like his movies, especially Pulp Ficion and Reservoir Dogs.

I agree. I think it had potential, and I do not mind things being "slow"...but I do not think it led up to anything THAT exciting. It was just OK to me, especially when watched after Planet Terror...which I absolutely love (I know I mentioned it before, but still...put them together and Death Proof is even less exciting).
