i'm ignorant about the older, interesting movies and godard and all that so i'm sure this list is shit.
Here is something geeky for you.. at work we discovered that Pi is an exact copy of an early Donald Duck short called "Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land"
That was the only part of 9th grade math class that I liked.
ok my listylist:
1. The Philadelphia Story: b/c 3 of the greatest movie stars are in it being perfect together. Plus it's got better dialogue than most any other movie ever. & it's funny.
2. Fried Green Tomatoes: this movie has everything
3. The Blues Brothers: good music. & it's funny.
4. The Big Lebowski: amazing. & it's funny.
5. The Jerk or All of Me: I prefer All of Me. They're both good. & funny.
6. Cry Baby: It makes life better; so it must make death a bt better, too.
7. The Godfather 1 & 2: SO good.
8. The Science of Sleep: it's lovely
9. Little Miss Sunshine: Also lovely. This movie makes you happier about people.
10. Spirited Away: spirited away.
11. Amarcord: It's beautiful. & funny.
12. Amadeus: if anything to understand the Seinfeld quote better & rest in peace. Plus this movie's fantastic. The Requiem.
13. Once Upon a Time in America: epic/life/death/etc
14. Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid: So good. So fun.
15. Cinema Paradiso: to cry.
16. The Muppet Moive: rainbow connection
And I cannot believe that about Pi. I am actually not able to believe it. I have to look into this. Does Donald have to war with corporations and Jews too?

Well, aren't I stupid. Since you and I both know that I love Tarantino, I'm keeping him off the list. This list encompasses bootleg, dvd, and vhs releases. I'll start off recommending Revengeismydestiny.com, kultflixxx.org, and thevideobeat.com as wonderful resources for bootleg dvds. Half the fun of it is just going through the lists and descriptions and finding something new.
-Manhunter:
I prefer the director's cut, which is part of the now out of print Anchor Bay 2 disc release. Only a few minutes difference, but if you can see it over the theatrical cut, do so. Either way, I recommend it.
-Near Dark:
Vampire western. Enjoy the very '80s trailer. The film has aged beautifully, far better than its rival, The Lost Boys. Vampires aren't romanticized, you never even see fangs or hear the word 'vampire'. Bill Paxton still absolutely loves this film, as does Adrian Pasdar (his first film).
-Deadly Friend
Now on dvd! I have immense love for Kristy Swanson, which is probably why I enjoy it so much. Not terribly scary, but actually really depressing. MY dad referred to it as "Endless Love meets Day of the Dead".
-Privilege
MY FAVORITE FILM EVER. Finally comes out on dvd July 29! Starring Paul Jones (Manfred Mann) and Jean Shrimpton. I'll allow the clip to speak for me. I just turn into a blithering mess over it.
-The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension!
I LOVE PETER WELLER
-Robocop
Just make sure it's uncut. MGM gave it a really nice 2 disc release last year. And yes, I LOVE PETER WELLER.
-Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis
It's considered heresy to like this version now (though back in 1984, it was very well received), but I don't care. Due to the music distribution rights, this may never see the light of day on dvd. You can find nice bootlegs of it on ebay, though. I still have the original vhs, as my dad loves this version. It was the first vhs he ever rented and watched on a vcr! If you want a copy of the soundtrack, I can help you out with that.
-Martin
Besides Near Dark, my favorite Vampire film. Also one of the best coming of age films I've ever seen.
-The Last American Virgin
A bit of a mish-mash, with a very by-the-numbers teen sex comedy, but the second half is extremely serious with a shocking ending. Stars my favorite '80s actress, Diane Franklin.
-Year of the Dragon
Sure, people laugh at Mickey Rourke now, but '80s Mickey Rourke is one of my favorite actors. I love this film and John Lone is the most beautiful man ever. Makes a great double feature with China Girl.
-China Girl
Terribly overlooked. Abel Ferrarra is my favorite director, all of his films are gritty, New York dramas with often times abrupt and startling endings. Only available on vhs. I need another copy as mine is wearing out.
-Bad Lieutenant
Another great film by Abel, with Harvey Keitel's greatest performance. When hearing that Werner Herzog is directing the remake (?!) with Nicolas Cage, he told them to go to hell. I agree.
-Dangerous Game
Another Abel film. If anyone can get Madonna to act, Abel can.
I'll add more later.

Finally, at least someone does!
I'll keep going as films keep popping up in my head:
-King of New York
More Abel, with Christopher Walken and David Caruso.
-Phantom of the Paradise
Now being remade. Came out before Rocky Horror Picture Show and is infinitely superior.
-Liquid Sky
Lead Anne Carlisle played dual roles; a gay male and a female fashion model. She's like a female David Bowie and even foxier (in my opinion). I got the soundtrack (vinyl only) for about $3.00, only to find out later that it's worth well over $50.00.
-Tokyo Pop
Can't find any clips, vhs only. American punk rock girl goes to Japan and finds love with the lead singer of a Japanese rock band. Makes you feel all fluffy inside though a little bittersweet.
-The Hitcher
Rutger Hauer, duh.
-Running Hot
VHS only. Eric Stoltz is sent to prison for killing his abusive father, but breaks out and shacks up with an older call girl who had been writing him letters during his trial. Seems as though the case isn't as cut and dry as initially presented, and she wants to help clear his name. Surprisingly brutal for a 1984 low budget film, and Stoltz and his co-star, Monica Carrico, are exceedingly charming. I bought the video based only on the cover art, but I knew I hit the jackpot with Stoltz (I fucking LOVE him). Extremely entertaining with its share of sleaze, it would've made for a great grindhouse film.

Thank you for this, I'm looking forward to seeing it

You're welcome! I try to spread the love for Privilege as much as I can. I'll be glad to finally have a legitimate dvd copy of it instead of the bootleg I've relied on for a couple of years now.
I believe Playboy was the only publication to praise the film; everyone else found it absurd back in 1967 that a popstar could be whored out to the public for profit and propaganda.
I am a film geek but this is too stressful for me!
My three favourite films are Trainspotting, Velvet Goldmine and Sid and Nancy but the latter two are for fans of specific music scenes and culture since they are mostly biographical, though also visually stunning.
EDIT: I just realized that I posted a long list a while ago in this thread. It's a couple posts up from this...
