i happened upon "La Faute a Fidel!" (Blame It On Fidel) this weekend, and completley fell in love with it. it was one of the most subtle, creative, and clever dramas i've ever seen.
it's about a 9 year old french girl in the early 1970's, whose young parents have abandoned their wealthy french-countryside lifestyle to become political activists in seventies Paris. it really has nothing to do with politics, and more about the bizarre tale of the girl, her adorable younger brother, and the way they misunderstand all the chaos around them. (ex: their nanny warns the kids of Communists and tells them Communists are all red; red everything. the kids interpret this to mean red haired, dressed in red, etc. and begin to worry Santa Claus could be The Communist.)
anyhow, it won some international film awards and went to Sundance. i think it's lovely.
