God, my synopses are so queer.
Lucid
Canadian film about a psychiatrist who has moved with his his daughter to a new town after being caught cheating on his wife. He's a psychiatrist and the movie revolves around his relationship with three out-patients who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. He struggles with getting dragged into his patients' issues but he finds it increasingly hard as time goes on.
The Corporation
A fresh look at corporate entities in modern society, a look back on history, and a stark observation of the future of the world and corporations. I must've watched this 7 times when I rented it.
Waking Life
Amazing conversations about life and general socio-spiritual stuff. Very stylish, very candid, and so fucking satisfying to watch it's not funny. When I had my existential crisis this was the first thing to help me through it.
What the Bleep Do We Know!?
Half documentary, half feature film, it introduces practical quantum physics and some of the world's greatest minds theorize some fantastic connections. I am always recommending this film to those people who love the more though-provoking, less chit-chatty films. It's right into the thick of it and it can go on for 5 hours (provided you get the Down The Rabbit Hole 2-disc set). So much is covered and there's a lot of bonus material (I even sat through all of the conversations the filmmakers had with some audiences. And I never ever do that.
Hedwig & The Angry Inch
A transsexual with a botched genital transformation tours on the tail of ex-babysittee Tommy Gnosis in an attempt to prove plagiarism. The film evolves well beyond this plot and it features possibly my favourite soundtrack ever.
I'm sure you've seen it, but I had to. This movie ushered me into manhood not 5 years back.
Gods, Gambling, & LSD
A very loose documentary based on the travels of a filmmaker through the world. I don't know how to describe it, it's all over the place. But in a good way.
Guerilla: The Taking of Patti Hearst
Self-explanatory.
He Died With A Falafel In His Hand
Sardonic comedy about a strange man's experiences with stranger roommates.
Since Otar Left
French film about a mother and daughter who cover up a relative's death to keep the peace with the grandmother of the house.
Love Liza
A woman kills herself for no apparent reason and leaves a note for her boyfriend, Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character. Shortly after, he develops an addiction to smelling gasoline and this addiction leads him into some wonky territory. Also, Kathy Bates is in it.
Another Day In Paradise
Petty thief goes bigger with James Woods' character, an ex-army medic who will do anything for cash. Also stars Melanie Griffith.
High
1969 Canadian film about.... fuck. Like. Random hipster shit. It get really weird, really fast. I was mesmerized all night.
Kitchen Party
Canadian 90's film about a group of young adults who have a party in some guy's kitchen since this parents won't allow him to go into most of the house. One of the girls from Regenesis is in it and Laura Harris (from Dead Like Me) are in it.
Brain Candy
Kids in the Hall film about an experimental drug that causes happiness but test subjects begin to enter unconscious states of repeating euphoric memories, completely detaching them from reality. One of the scientists makes a stand against the pharmaceutical company. And all in true KitH fashion.
Dolores Claiborne
Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh in another Stephen King adaptation (one of the very best too). Dolores is accused of murdering a long time, elderly employer and her daughter visits her hometown to find out the truth. Twists through the family past with Dolores' abusive husband and bitchy employer. I can still picture, very clearly, some of the scenes in this film. It is very well done. One of my all-time favourites.
The Fountainhead
Black and white era film about a man who hires an architect to make the plans for a new housing project for a corporation. The deal turns sour and things get blown wildly out of proportion. The subject matter is way ahead of its time and the filibuster is top notch in
every damned scene it rears its head.
Grass
A documentary about the criminalization of marijuana use in America. Quirky and well made.
Scared Sacred
Film about various countries and the impressions of religious life on their respective cultures and societies.
Brazil
Fantastic sci-fi comedy/drama from Britain about a man whose life is shaken up by the appearance of a strange man on the run (played by a quirky Robert DeNiro!) Oh, and there's a love interest situation but I can't remember it.
