how do -you- choose a play

i know this sounds retarded but pls just read (& reply etc)

ive had a long standing (literally unfounded but suspected) prejudice against plays and live theatre. id like to prove myself wrong and i have been trying to find a play that i could see that might be successful in doing that

i have no idea how to choose a play. i am good at locating films and sourcing things id like and new films and all that but i have no sense of direction with theatre

all the people i know shun theatre - they are no help

i have looked up on the internets about plays that are showing - for instance -

"A modern classic, The Real Thing is a thinly disguised self-portrait of a writer who, through his life and work, struggles to make sense of that most elusive of human emotions, love. "

^that sounds like it could be good but most likely utter ****.

someone who knows about this stuff?

Start with a performance of a well-known play. Then you can read up about it on wikipedia or somesuch and see if it might interest you. They're mostly well-known for some half-decent reason. Don't leap straight into out there alternative theatre by some unemployable wannabe you've never heard of before and probably never will again. If you want nudity, try student theatre.

A really (overly?) safe bet is a play based on a movie, or which got turned into a movie.

Brecht is good.

Oh you know, any
Ibsen
Pinter
Brecht
Wilde
Shakespeare
A woman of some sort (so I don't seem totally Dead White Men)
Some sort of ethnic playwright (not racialist either!)

The play they turned into The Full Monty
Educating Rita
Equus
Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf

Avoid like the plague:
The Blue Room

Not an interpretive dance fan, I see. Sad. My friend Dan and I did some drunken interpretive dance to The Nolans at a party once, just to annoy some preening fagling who texted his hag to drive over to give him a neck massage.

i was thinking of any of the russians but no shakespeare, sorry. you know this is all very stressful.

your interpretative dance only counts if you wore lycra and it was aided with the use of shadows.
