I'm going to be blaringly obvious and say:
Katharine Hepburn in Suddenly Last Summer, Lion in Winter, & Long Day's Journey into Night. She's pretty perfect in comedies such as Bringing Up Baby, too.

Ellen Burstyn in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore & Requiem for a Dream.
Giulietta Masina in La Strada
Kathy Bates in Fried Green Tomatoes & Dolores Claiborne
Jodi Foster in Taxi Driver & Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore & Silence of the Lambs
Tsai Chin in Joy Luck Club
Emma Thompson in Much Ado About Nothing & Remains of the Day
Notes on a Scandal: Judi Dench & Cate Blanchett

Jean Arthur in Talk of the Town
Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny
Lily Tomlin in All of Me

...I don't know I have to go eat dinner.

Bates in Misery would be my number 16. Amazing. I tried to get into Claiborne but both times I gave up. I'll give it another shot.

I also love the Joy Luck Club but the ensemble is so fantastic I can't single one out as being better than the other. I should just give them a group slot.

Also, Lily, Have you seen her in Nashville, Short Cuts or A Prairie Home Companion? Perfection.

Well, check out her others. Also, for Bancroft, she is amazing in a very small film called 'night Mother. It's not out on DVD but it gets played on the movie channels now and again. It also has Sissy Spacek.

Sissy Spacek plays a frumpy late 30s woman who calmly tells her live in mother she intends to kill herself at the end of the evening. It's haunting.

Emily Watson in Breaking The Waves.

I think that's the be-all and end-all for me, of compelling performances.

Out of those 3 I've only seen Prarie Home Companion (I saw parts of Nashville dubbed in Italian, but I had to give that up). She was very good in it, but I actually liked Streep's performance even more, which is odd because I don't usually like her all that much. But that movie was such a dissapointment.
She also gave a good performance in Tea With Mussolini. Such a good cast, anyway.

The bits I've seen of Misery have caused me to put it off. But I'm planning on seeing it. Sometime.
