| | The X-MEN films i feel ok starting a thread about this here. i was prepared to be disappointed by the XMEN films because I understand how Hollywood feels about its control of the genre - absolutist and totalitarian.
as such they have no real "respect" for artists who work in flat planes and two dimensions. the result is that they try to ape still artists and flat plane and panel artists -- like Bill Sinkiewicz and Arthur Adams, two among the many who modernized XMEN from the 1960s
they think that they are better just because they make a lot of money. anyone who studied Dada even a little knows that that is the sort of attitude capitalistic folk have about art, and why Dada had to happen.
as it is, Daredevil and 500 both sort of are floppy. Esp. Daredevil.
when Marvel made a comic it could look alot like another title they did. of course "snob admirers" won't agree. well, they can start a competitive thread or do that 'nobody cares anyway' pose that works. for them. |

What's interesting to me about this thread is that I saw it on the side in this new "latest threads" thing and immediately thought of you and wondered if you ever saw the ATHF movie? (and then I came into the thread and you're here! hallo!)

| | | the politic implications of certain sci fi must be mentioned. XMEN says things that STAR TREK doesn't say: as in Wolverine is basically a cop killer and they MEANT to say that in the movie. But he's not offing street cops -- but black clad NWO special ops types who home invade. And him in putting them down has a whole message about gov't. The film doesn't go into enough detail -- when Chris Claremont created the Wolverine character in the 1980s he was talking about MKULTRA before it was even "edgy" -- but he was talking about MKULTRA, Operation MONARCH and other mind controlled-killer creation programmes made by the NWO and secret gov't.
XMEN has always discussed the Illuminati. Their archenemies the Brotherhood are called in the comic "the Hell Fire Club" and are meant to be a simpering but comically accurate parody of the Illuminati -- which is why they dressed like eighteenth century Victorian fops in the comics and animated series.
This is not lost on all people who see the films but it doesn't always register with the conscious mind. The idea of something like Magneto's "Brotherhood" being REAL is too ludicrous and absurd... |

Anyways, it appears that longshot would like to have a discussion about the political undertones of the X-men films. And apparently he also thinks the directors/producers of the film did a fair job of taking this from comic to movie if I'm understanding him correctly. I'm just not in the mood for a deep discussion on x-men though, you know?
and famke is hot, but wolverine is hotter. I have a thing for rockabilly hair and sideburns.

| | I heard someone (I think it was the director Bryan Singer who is gay) talking about his x-men movies and talking how it can be a metaphor for gays in society.
Discovering something 'different,' about themselves when they hit puberty and the rest of society being afraid of what they don't understand/relate to and start hating for no real good reason. The casting of Ian McKellen for Magneto was intentional because of his orientation in real life.
Now I can't watch it the same way anymore! Quotes in the movie like Bobby "coming out to his parents" that he's a mutant? Should "mutants be allowed to teach in the schools?" Parents asking, "Have you ever tried not being a mutant?"
My x-men innocense is lost
How did I not spot it before?! |

| | the whole thing -- the idea that wolverine's memory was erased by Feds and that deadly claws were put into him to make him a killing machine...sweet. esp. since the Govt actually has DONE things like that to people. in the original story wolverine was a miserable drunk all the time. xavier sent him to japan to get some zen. that is where he met Honorable Lady Deathstrike, they fell in love and maybe had babies...they didn't hit that part in x2 but if they do a wolverine solo flick they might go back to that. (erased memories, natch...)
