I heard someone (I think it was the director Bryan Singer who is gay) talking about his x-men movies and talking how it can be a metaphor for gays in society.
Discovering something 'different,' about themselves when they hit puberty and the rest of society being afraid of what they don't understand/relate to and start hating for no real good reason. The casting of Ian McKellen for Magneto was intentional because of his orientation in real life.
Now I can't watch it the same way anymore! Quotes in the movie like Bobby "coming out to his parents" that he's a mutant? Should "mutants be allowed to teach in the schools?" Parents asking, "Have you ever tried not being a mutant?"
