i'm wondering whether my father-in-law would enjoy it - he grew up in baltimore, so he tends to like films/shows that take place there

As long as he's into murder/whodunnit type stuff I would say yeah. In the beginning I got distracted by all the places I recognized but by the end of the first episode I was hooked. We're wrapping up the last two episodes of the first season tonight.

Did you ever watch Homicide? I loved that show as well.
