In particular I second these choices. Which means you have to watch them now. It has been decided.
Among many many others, I also especially liked:
Turkish Delight
Everybody Famous
Festen (The Celebration)
Live Flesh
Fucking Amal
Battle Royale
My Neighbour Totoro
I'm not including English language films from the various English-speaking countries.

Basically YES to all Miyazaki films, without exception. They're so amazing. Well, to me anyway. I have a particular soft spot for Nausicaa.

Also I saw a Turkish film a while back about two girls, and one of them changes the other's personality. Undertones of lesbianism too. Christ knows what the title was
That's The Idiots, right? I love it. But not as much as Festen. Possibly my all-time favourite film.
