| | | Worse: they're remaking The Birds, with an explanation. That is to say, taking a decentish thriller film, and removing the one thing that makes it thrilling. |

Why don't they go shit all over something less likeable, like Faster, Pussycat or Blackula? |

| | | WTF?
That's really depressing. "The kids these days can't understabnd subtlety, we gotta spell everything out for them!"
I hate that. They shouldn't be ruining classic movies just to make money. Especially if they're going to change them this badly.

| | | Testing and re-testing a thing so they take no chance is just good business sense, as is remaking old movies and making movies of old tv shows. It has the best kind of built-in audience--even those that disapprove will show up to check it out.
These days, you'd have to be a modern-day Hitchcock (that is, have his power and box-office clout) to get by with that greatly ambiguous ending he gave to The Birds.
Oh yeah, and he was his own boss. That helps too.
Personally, I don't care much if they remake old movies. Who knows, maybe they will come up with a couple of clever scenes or do something interesting somewhere. The only time it really bothers me is in cases like Gus Van Sant's Psycho--who needs a frame-for-frame reconstruction of a movie? Unless this is only a pretext to deconstruct it, which he didn't. |

Oh, I heard about this a while ago, probably through KR. I was very angry about it at the time, now I can't really get myself worked up over it, I just keep myself oblivious and let these shitty remakes wash over me. I mean, it'll be forgotten about in six months, once the directors have made a quick buck. But that is the most annoying thing, because surely there are writers out there struggling because of this lack of willingness to take a chance on a new story. |

The Birds is a masterpiece. Its an extremely risky move to remake a movie that doesn't need to be remade.
Hitch got it right the first time.

She was wrong, anyway.
