| | | Movies based on video games vs movies based on comic books: Which are better/suck least?
Logically, I would've thought video game movies would suffer from the fact that most games don't have very complex plots because they need to be flexible to make the gameplay any good, so the film maker has to either invent a new one or use the original, which is likely to be full of holes.
Whereas comics basically provide the director with a pre-written storyboard - but tend to have more of a cult following who'll be pissed off if anything about it is even slightly wrong/removed from how they imagined it. |

| | | I think movies based on comics make better films, but it's all relative. They're both near the bottom of the pile frankly.

| | | I don't know, I can't think of any recent movies based on comic books that people haven't bitched about for no adequately explored reason. I don't know if maybe it's just a case of nothing being right for them, but I'll admit, without having read the original comics, stuff like From Hell and League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen have been pretty bad (which has made me question the tastes of people who liked the comics; how different could they be?).
Games tend to be cash-ins and I think people have lower expectations of them, and while most are dumb action movies, you can still make a quality judgement. Films like Alone in the Dark and Super Mario Brothers are inexcusably shit, whereas Advent Children and Silent Hill have been pretty good. And The Spirits Within.... well, fuck knows.
I've always been more interested in movies that aren't sold to me as awesome. If you're not being told that a movie will cure cancer or whatever, you can actually make a judgement on what you see as well as what you expect, rather than just the latter. I can watch Doom and be pleasently surprised that it doesn't totally suck, but I can't even watch Garden State now, because people talk about it like it's the second coming, and yet it has Zack Braff in it. It's like PRECONCEPTION PARADOX OVERLOAD. |

| | | I'd say movies based on comics tend to suck less. The film adaptations of Alone In The Dark, House Of The Dead, BloodRayne all sucked major arse. Uwe Boll shouldn't be let near a fucking camera ever again.

| | | Nah, just an example of a movie that can't be as good as everyone says it is. With cult movies, I think it's more and more a case of you either love them or just don't know why anyone's that bothered. Bottle Rocket would be my example. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
