| | | I wonder what feminist objections you will have to this movie. Probably none because the women will be in pretty outfits. |

| | | I don't know if it's really fair to call the characterization of the women in DL "offensive". The roles that these women are given to play in society are certianly demeaning, and that reality drives the events in the story--the only way Glenn Close's character can assert her will (at least in her eyes) is through deviousness, and this is how she gets her revenge on the constrictions that are forced on her. In that way it's kind of like the female characters in Strindberg's plays--you always hear how he hated women because we see them acting in this mindfucking, underhanded manner, yet how else could a strong-willed woman assert herself in that society? This isn't to say that given the choice these women would necessarily act any differently, but that's another story. |

| | | the movie is so luscious. glenn close, what a sexy bitch. she had that whole powdery face going and the last scene of her, with tears, having been humiliated, creepy and pretty at the same time.
i'm reading the book now. i've been reading this long ass thing for the past three months. i'm not a slow reader. it's just structured so oddly, correspondences. it makes me only read it at night, finish one letter and then sleep. ugh. |

I still love the movie though. | well I saw the movie ages ago so it's not very fresh in my memory, but the movie captures the way women were back then, and it was a sexist society but that's the way it was, I don't find it offensive, but times have changed and sexism is supposedly a thing of the past, so why are we still plagued by mysoginist directors and story tellers? |
