wow, when i read it i didnt think it was happy at all. i mean she got out from the hospital and she did change somehow, but i think it still suggested she wasn't ok or anything, it was like... nothing matters i dont care i can always try to kill myself again. it was almost scary.

anyway. i cant stand julia stiles and i almost cried when i read that she was going to be in this. i think bell jar is probably hard to translate on screen, but now im sure its going to be just blah. that book was very important to me too once, even though i know its kind of naive...

stiles is one of the producers.

i'm not suprised she would be tied to the film. she's done three shakepeare adaptations and loves her books.

i like her, but the "let's add some haha's to the story" is where it's questionable.

At least Gwyneth Paltrow won't be in it.

I concur on "the American happy ending" not being that happy. She survives suicide, and that's all.

I wonder if they are going to shoot it in the book's locations? Because Plath used to come to the beach right near me quite often and I think in the book she tries to drown herself once there. If they do, hopefully, I'd like to slap Julia Stiles.

My question is, will they ever make an Assia Wevill movie? And who would play her? THAT would be an interesting film! Her life was positively crazy.

I knew about that already and it looks bad, especially that cheesy poster , but I've never watched it. It's just they can only make and remake it so many times and now it's going to be made a second time so that means it will be done to death so if someone tries to make it again it won't ever happen.

As much as I bitch about Gwenny playing her, and as much as a lot of people are bitching about Julia Stiles, you really do have to be a bit of a bitch to play Sylvia Plath. The woman was a monster of ambition, among other things.

I think one of the worst things about Sylvia was how the writers put in Ted sleeping with Sylvia and then telling her Assia was pregnant the night she killed herself - I have read almost all of the gazillion biographies on her and I've never read that that happened. It was a while ago that I read up so much on her but I don't remember that and I think I would have. It was a really horrible way of pointing the finger at him when she had problems before she met him.

Yep. All the same, it's interesting that Assia had as many problems as Sylvia did.

when i first saw this thread i was like "hey she read that in 10 things i hate about you!" ha ha

first of all, i don't think the book can ever be a movie but if it had to be i think this should only be some small indie movie with a really amazing actress to play the part. having julia stiles play it is bad enough but to make it "humorous" completely butchers the book. i love the book and while it probably doesn't "touch me" or "affect me", it still has a point that i can see and i know that for a lot of people it DOES affect them. maybe this is just a rumor and the movie won't happen. remember that rumor about avril lavigne playing courtney love in a biopic?

I think they should make an Assia Wevill film. Her life was pretty interesting as well, read the book Lover of Unreason (her biography). It was probably one of the most intense, exhausting books ever.
