ok, first of all no one who really likes art would use arty fartsy to describe it. That is the wannabe art lover's lingo.

ugggh, nothing comes to mind right now. There is this amazing movie with Max Von Sydow called INTACTO, you can start with that. It's argentinian if I'm not mistaken-

I didn't like Maria Full of Grace.

Almodovar's films are good. I LOVED Volver.

Sin Noticias de Dios is great too.

silent films are gorgeous. Like Metropolis or Fausto.

The stop-motion short films by the Brothers Quay get my art-rocks off.

Any movie by David Lynch.

The short films of Richard Kern, though that's more from the exploitative punk art movement. Still very very good.

Pep Squad, though a comedy, is about as pretentious and arty as they come.

Greg Araki's Nowhere.

High Art starring Ally Sheedy is more on the side of realism, but the name says it all.

John Waters' films, though one might say they are "anti-art," would fit in here as well.

EDIT: I just realized you're requesting foreign films. Of which only the Brothers Quay would apply......sorry.

I lovelovelove Metropolis. This little dinky theater near where I live is supposed to be showing it at some point.

I've been curiously peeking into some of Valentino's work as well.

And of course, one can never go wrong with Charlie Chaplin.

Other recommnedations influenced by my father's film collection:

And speaking of silent films, he loves this one:

I've watched it with him before, it's really quite beautiful.

Fallen Angels and Happy Together are two other films by Wong Kar Wai that everyone should check out.

The Three Colours trilogy is another great piece of film making, Three Colours: Blue in particular. Juliette Binoche is fantastic in it.

I would like to recommend some of my personal fave Scandiwegian films:

Festen (The celebration)
The Idiots [features teh cock!]
Show me love (Fucking Amal [can't do special thingies on the Swedish "A", soz])
Wild Strawberries
Persona

Start with some Jean-Luc Godard. Weekend is my favorite.

Anything directed by:

Fellini
Bergman
Truffaut
Bunuel

i've been dying to see battle royale for ages! unfortunately, it's not in any of the video stores i visit, and they usually have a decent section for foreign. a shame.

On that note, Lady Vengeance is one of my favorite movies ever. It's absolutely beautiful and a true masterpiece. The music, the visuals, and the amazing performance by Yeong-ae Lee...I could just go on. Chan-wook Park really has proved himself as a director, and it was a fitting conclusion to his similarily Vengeance themed trilogy.

slightly offtopic, but i also have come to the conclusion that i am the only Takashi Miike fan to NOT like Audition.

the Idiots is the same one by Lars von Trier, right? I really wanted to see that one as well as Show Me Love (or Fucking Åmål ). Glad to see they're both good, makes me wish I could find it at the place I rent movies from

edit: actually, upon looking up the other movies you listed, i'm very interested in seeing Persona (I've never seen any Ingmar Bergman or Liv Ullman, and I call myself a film buff ) as well as Festen, but i have to admit the latter one more is for me to practice my Danish. Thanks for recommending them!

Battle Royale is damn good, but extremely heartbreaking. And the actors, all in their teens, were amazing.

I have yet to see Lady Vengeance, though my father really enjoyed it, as well as Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance.

As for not liking Audition? Don't worry, plenty of us other Takashi Miike fans love it enough to make up for that.

Speaking of Miike:

I find these two to both be underrated.
