Ones I have particularly admired, and think are underrated, or are dodgy but with oft-overlooked redeeming features. Some of those movies on the list I thought are actually widely considered to be pretty good. I wasn't aware that The Sweet Hereafter was in any way "underrated".

And having Hook on that list is grotesque. A film widely considered to be marginally less entertaining than watching Kate Capshaw eating Steven Spielberg's arse while he tries to come to terms with his parents splitting up when he was a child, and I personallystill think it's overrated.

I generally agree with this list.

But American Psycho? Really?? I must've missed the qualities that made it even ok.

Some of these films are Oscar-nominated or Oscar winners...how do they qualify as "underrated"?

I was thinking that too. Maybe in terms of written reviews by critics? Or maybe box office $$.

ew there are alot of movies on that list that aren't underrated, they are just terrible! Copland, Very Bad Things, Vanilla Sky? Have you seen these movies? And why is Menace II Society so underrated? It was one of the most revered films of the 90s. And a good portion of the films listed are cult classics.

That list is simply stupid.

I don't see how The Color Purple, which was a critical hit, nominated for 11 Oscars, made 98 million dollars in box office, has a current stage musical adaptation, has a 2 disc special edition DVD, and is one of the most appreciated films starring an all African American cast is at all underrated?

I love that movie and would never consider it underrated. It has it's rightful place as a masterpeice.

haha, good point!

It's "underrated" because it should be more highly rated than it already is, and should have made more than $100M at the box office

A lot of these movies are mediocre at best. Even the most avid Lynch fan would agree that Lost Highway and the Straight Story are iffy. And Birth? Don't get me started.

I did agree with Happiness being on the list. Probably one of the most brilliant films I've ever seen, and most people have never even heard of it. A comedy about a child molester? Yeah. But whoever made this certainly forgot about a few, like Pep Squad, The Anniversary Party, and Nowhere, to name just a few.

I agree that Happiness is underrated but Welcome to the Dollhouse is even more so.

Mysterious Skin is also underrated.

I didn't really get into Mysterious Skin....not that it was bad or anything. It was certainly better than Splendor. But it certainly wasn't anywhere near as good as Nowhere.

No. Just no.

But yes to Jacob's Ladder and The Sweet Herafter. Most of the rest I haven't seen.
