The housekeepers left while they were still alive. Nicole Kidman's character went bezerk because the health of her children prevented her from leaving. Killing her kids, in her moment of insanity, seemed like a logical solution to free herself from that house. Plus add on the fact that she lost her husband during the war..she was isolated and felt trapped.
