Tobi Vail on Riot Grrrl...

Found this while cruising the net. I've never seen Tobi Vail -Ever- even in pictures she covers up with glasses. I thought she was cuter....

Thank for posting this. When do you think the first interview was realised? I've never seen her talk before, or even see a pic her without her glasses ! This girl broke Kurt Cobain's heart...

One day you'll understand that beauty is not what matters, and that many feminists are fucking beautiful.

did you ever hear of the expression "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"?

It also saddens me that there are girls here putting so much emphasis on what Tobi looks like and totally ignoring what she's done. She was a fucking good drummer and BK are a great band. Fuck what she looks like.

It doesn't matter what she looks like. Dating a member of Bikini Kill was good for credibility.
Ever read Kurt's journals or one of his interviews? He was obsessed with PC'ness and what was perceived as cool.

But now I know why Bikini Kill didn't give many interviews. They're boring.
The ten second live clip was the best part. Tobi and Kathleen's insipid gum-flapping just took up space.

OK,

Me thinking out loud in this forum “I thought she was cuter" is beyond retarded since I was addressing an alleged feminist chameleon. My reason for doing so however is because she has dated some of the coolest and cutest rock guys. I'm being honest here, and this has nothing to do with her worth as a "feminist" but I thought Toby would have been a killer looking punk rock babe. Instead she looks like my fat neighbor next door, which is funny. UGh....? Hell even Courtney Love had a hot "fuck me' grunge girl vibe/look going for her back in the day, so did Kim Gordon, and Kat Bjelland and Kathleen Hanna- but Toby falls short of anything that is star or even ART material.

Sorry girls. AS a female it's in my nature to check out other girls.

But my second and most important comment is- frankly, I miss Toby Vail's point. BK was all into female empowerment "pick up your guitar, do what the guys do" but all I get from them is alot of whiny self absorbed mind trips. They spew out anger and bitterness and resentment without real in depth solutions. I'm pretty certain that chanting "huggy bear" into a microphone is not going to produce the same results as one female telling another female "go to school, study Law, or Medicine or Finance, get your masters, get a job then kick major boy ass- then you can drive them off stage.."
All I get from Bikini Kill is a bunch of bored college girls that don't want to take showers and their only purpose is to entertain angst-ridden highschool journal keepers by fooling them into thinking that their music is truly social commentary. Sorry kids, writing "whore" on your arm only leaves marks on your bed sheets- not on society.

It's cool if you love them- they don't appeal to me and they never will.

By the way- looking at the video again, I realized that The Slits were doing what Bikini Kill was doing back in 1977. In fact all women in Punk were spreading the same message....

So what's BK's Point?

have you ever heard of postmodernism, miss candy-o? everybody's doing something that's already been done.

while i appreciate your point, it sounds more like you don't like bikini kill than anything else. which is fine, but if you're going to use ugliness/writing on one's arm as an indictment then shouldn't clove be at the top of your list?

lydia lunch, exene cervenka, diamanda galas, susie bright, karen finley, ann magnusson ETC ETC were all doing it long ago.

Well- to be honest, Courtney is an asshole for being a poseur and writing words of wisdom on body parts, being a direct critic of riot grrrl and all.

Listen, I don't want this thread to become personal. I don't hate anyone or anything. I actually posted that link because I found Toby to be somewhat intriguing- in a "girl next door becomes local legend" sense. I just find it funny that feminists get upset because some of us are pointing out that Toby is not cute, yet I can't point out that Toby's "feminist" points hold no merit. It's not like I'm ripping Gloria Steinman (a modern day goddess) for having fat thighs!! I'm not trying to be an academic snob here- but even Kathleen Hanna holds more clout that Toby. I give credit where credit is due.

BK's point is that no matter how many people said the same thing as they say (or said) society is still not perfect. there are still plenty who did not get the message. and they try to reach them.

I personally think tobi is not that bad.

journals? no.
interviews? yes.

I think that there is nothing bad about being PC. and I got the impression that he meant it.

as far as "being cool" is concerned: “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone”
everyone wants to be accepted. probably kurt just liked the scene he was in and thought the people there were great and he wanted them to accept him. that is normal. especially if you are as self-conscious as kurt probably was.

But I don't think he dated Tobi because of credibility.
She was an artist. and how many artists say that only other artists understand them. having broken up w/Tracy he probably thought she was nice and they got along...
what is wrong about that???

Hehe. I feel that we share many common views too.

It's just that I'm so annoyed by completely stupid comments such as "she became a feminist because she was too ugly to get the boys!". That's bullshit! Kathleen is pretty, Tobi is pretty, and tons of feminists are pretty if not fucking gorgeous. Paris Hilton gets tons of boys yet I don't find her pretty at all. So it doesn't make any SENSE.

THEN you can drive them off stage?

so, as a girl, in addition to of course being perfectly gorgeous and having a "hot "fuck me' grunge girl vibe/look" to me, i have to go to school, study Law, or Medicine or Finance, get my masters, get a job then kick major boy ass to prove that i'm worthy to play my guitar on stage?
