| | | The Last King of Scotland Has anyone seen this? Forest Whitaker just won a Golden Globe as Best Actor for it, I want to see it this weekend. I heard he is just absolutely terrifying as Idi Amin. http://www.foxsearchlight.com/lastkingofscotland/ |

| | | I saw it last weekend and thought it was good. The acting is amazing (Forrest Whittaker especially though James McAvoy totally holds his own) but i thought the pacing was a little weird.
But DEF worth going to see! |

| | | I saw it tonight, it's impressive but EXTREMELY gory and violent in some parts. Forest Whitaker is scary as all hell. He basically IS Idi Amin in the film. |

| | | I was impressed by it, but didn't really enjoy it, if that makes sense.
The acting was wonderful, and it was far more engaging than I'd expected, I just... yeah, it wasn't really my thing.
Did anyone feel that parts of it, especially where he's walking down the stairwell with all the dead bodies, were reminiscent of Natural Born Killers?

| | | I thought it was wicked. Best portrayal of a psycho since Hannibal Lector in Silence Of the Lambs, he had a genuinely scarey presence.
it's violent in bits but I found Pan's Labyrinth more disturbing.

really? i thought the flow and pace was very strong, and seamless.
forest really fuckin NAILS this one, if anyone else gets that oscar (which i srsly doubt), it'll be a crying, crying shame (but the academy is known for that..hello, gf2? no oscar for al as corleone?!!?)
i think the thing about his performance (which really is about the character of amin) is that he could go from being this overjoyed, positive, charismatic ray of sunshine to this total MONSTER. and no matter what forest does, no matter how BAD of a guy he plays, he's always got that likeable quality about him. and that's PERFECT for this role, i mean this guy won over not only a whole nation but leaders of so many others. there was something about him that drew people to him, no matter how evil he was deep down. that's what it is about every dictator, people arent drawn to pure evil, they're drawn to the charisma and likeability that can so expertly disguise that evil. and forest really does that so perfectly within this INSANE paranoid murdering dictator. which is pretty effing amazing...
the kid surely DID hold his own. he didnt miss a beat. too bad he's not being recognized for it..
i also loved the blatant choice to make the film feel very much like films did in the 70s. the supergrain film, some underexposure going on, fast zooms and such. the choice of music, the opening credits, awesome. loved it. |

| | | does anyone know, how much of the events of the film are factual? was there a real garrigan, and how close was his story to that of the film?
i need to go look into whether this was an adaptation from a book/article, etc. |

| | | i think Amin did have a Scottish physician, but the character Garrigan is fictional and was not any more based on the real doctor than that.
someone might have to verify this, but i read it a couple of weeks ago.

| | | I thought it was excellent...Forrest deserves to win. It's based on a novel...the doctor is a composite of a few different people in Amin's life. |

i need to go look into whether this was an adaptation from a book/article, etc. | weirdly, I think Garrigan was based on an english man that advised Amin. But he did have a scottish physician and he was obsessed with scotland so I think given the message he was going for it was easier for him to be scottish so it was more obvious how he'd get such a position without really pushing for it.
but I only know that cause I was reading wikipedia entries on it after I saw the film last week.
It will almost be weird to see Forrest Whitaker talk normally now.

There's always a "likeable" quality about them that is baffling when you consider the heinous things they do. |

| | | I really liked this film, i don't think its something i could watch again though purely for the whole "heavyness" of its subject.
That torture scene at the end, dear god. |
