The way I understand it, Shannen was a cunt in real life & nobody wanted to work with her...so they made Kelly the female lead, had her date Dylan and cut back on Brenda storylines.
When Kelly first started fooling around with her best friend's boyfriend, you can tell the writers went out of their way to have her retain her likability (assuming she had any to start with) as she broke up one of the most beloved couples in television history.
Kelly played the martyr, giving sad looks as she watched Dylan & Brenda together. Refusing to sleep with Dylan until they came clean to Brenda. And both girls agreeing to let Dylan decide.
What I don't understand is are we supposed to like Kelly in season four? I think so, because everybody involved with the show was obviously fucking in love with the character. They put her through a lot of bad shit, but she always emerged from it more holier than thou than ever.
But she's such a bitch. She starts off the season soaking her panties over some frat boy who spread rumors about her in high school...essentially cheats on the guy she stole from her best friend...he forgives her.
She freaks out anytime he comes to Brenda's rescue. Dylan goes down to Palm Springs to give Brenda a ride home...Kelly freaks out. But when Dylan saved her douche-bag stepbrother from getting arrested for possession an episode earlier, Kelly is fine with that.
She's jealous of her boyfriend's kid sister for fucksakes. Dylan was crazy about that kid, but everytime she was around, you could tell Kelly wanted to choke the bitch out.
Then she essentially cheats on the guy again with Brandon Walsh, the biggest asshole in Beverly Hills.
God, I wish they kept Brenda around and instead had Brandon and Kelly leave the show together. And possibly die en route to somewhere else.
It also bugged me how Andrea became Kelly's lapdog.
The Brenda/Donna scene after Donna finds David is cheating on her was so much more touching and their friendship seemed less gross.
Brandon, Kelly and Andrea are the sit around and be judgemental types.
Brenda, Dylan and Donna were the heart of the show.
Steve was okay.
David was an uptight little bitch of Kevin Arnold proportions. He treated Donna the same way Kev treated Paul on the Wonder Years. Only Paul was quicker to give up his cherry.
