| | | I thought was a great movie. OMG how gross was it when the captain cut his mouth and it had a slit on the side?? Uggghhhh I cannot imagine how much that would hurt. The he stitched it up himself. Ouch! |

That's why I think the cheek-sewing scene was so powerful, even though I had trouble watching it. I also liked the way he tried to surrender with dignity when he realized he'd lost. And I loved the way he got cut off in the middle of his surrender and got dismissed. | No it wasn't supposed to make us like the Captain as a person- it's all because of those Hollywood movies that make us think "Oh he's courageous? He must be a good guy." It's not so black and white, yeah? I thought that cheek sewing scene was the most important in terms of the Captain's character. And, yeah, I had trouble watching it, too!
Last night I had to watch the Oscars with some people who thought Pan's Labyrinth was too "sadistic." They preferred movies like Crash . |

We'd like to think courage is always good, but it's like strength or intelligence, it depends on what it's being used in service of. Also, I think the Captain fairly clearly saw himself as that kind of hero (although, given when he would have been born, maybe his references wouldn't be Hollywood).
