| | | I loved Sideways, actually.
I just realised how lame I am 'cause I've seen most of these. I'm going to try & see what DVDs my video shop has though so keep them coming incase they don't have the ones I haven't seen... |

Probably the most memorable movie I saw this year.
Parts are most definitely not funny. Parts are just outright tragic. But there are some genuinely funny moments and the last scene left me feeling hopeful but not in a hokey way.
Great soundtrack too. |

i dont know how you feel about movies that are 'musical' but i was totally skeptical too.
i know i know, its like doris day is every sweet innocent 50s good girl with a sweet singing voice cliche and the first half an hour of this movie is kind of cheesy like that but it has a strange edge , cause shes getting older and she needs to find a husband yadda yadda. but then frank shows up as her hired paino player and like whoa! its a totally different movie. he has a real darkness and cynicism, its weirdly sophisticated, he's suicidal, all that kind of good stuff. funny thing is doris totally blends in perfectly. easily as good an acting part he ever had, and its worth it just for the scenes when he's singing in the bar by himself. he was a brilliant actor through song not many people are..
of course theres a happy, 'appreciate life' ending, you know she's gonna have her wise life loving effect on him..but the best thing is the cheerful/ darkness contrast.
