| | OK was anyone else disturbed by the Nissan Versa product placement this week?...
I was kind of frustrated by this episode. I'm impatient for things to happen! Claire's story... it bugs me that she was raped/"killed"; she seems like a tough, savvy girl and for that to happen to her just seemed like such an artificial move to me. But it can happen to anyone so I guess I should accept it. However, I am intrigued to discover how she gets out of the morgue/coroner's room/whatever, with her chest flayed open and being presumed dead! Of course she'll just heal, but is she going to go on the run?
I love watching Hiro, how he's following the comic book and bringing his skeptical dorky friend along. He's such a believer, of course everything is adding up for him so he has no reason to be skeptical... but that faith makes him seem really pure.
Here's the "official/unofficial" fan site for the show: http://www.9thwonders.com/ |

But I like watching Hiro, Peter, and the mind-reading cop, and it seems they are deliberately holding a lot back in these early episodes so I think I'll give it until 5.
And it seems silly to say this about a superhero show, but sometimes it feels so contrived and artificial that it puts me off, but then I tell myself it's supposed to be like a comic book so of course it won't be "natural." But that makes me leery b/c I don't want to have to keep telling myself all the time, "Oh go along with it, it's a comic book" b/c it's NOT really a comic book.... and that isn't a valid excuse anyway. I'm hoping this feeling will go away as the world of the show unfolds and everything is in its proper context; everything is so disjointed now but it seems like they're working toward bringing the characters and stories together. |

also the chick who "discovers that her mirror image has a secret."

it's actually a pretty good show and not the cornball festival it sounds like. |

| | | yeah there are totally worse powers out there.
However if i were goin to make a prime time show based on superheros.... i'd pick some pretty fuckin amazing powers. Telekinetics, pyrokinetics, teleporting, superstrength, heightenend senses, lasers out of whatever orifices you can think of....
not someone who paints the future, or some chick who's reflection tells her tomorrows Day of Our Lives episode..... |

if you're looking for a show centered around what baddy the good guys can kill this week, then the show is definitely not for you. |

I take back what I said earlier about "It's a comic book" not being a valid excuse for incredible situations on the show. If it were Smallville I would have no problem with just about anything that happened, as long as it was in keeping with the familiar mythology. But this on this show, the mythology is an unknown quantity. Like at first I was offended by the cute-guy-she-liked raping her & "killing" her, but then I realized that in the context of the show it is just a device... to give her a reason for vengeance, the degree she takes it to (putting the fear of god into him, or actually killing him) is what will determine what kind of "hero" she turns out to be.
Of course I'm PC enough to still feel uncomfortable with rape and murder being "just a device"! |

i hate that chick's dad. i know he's the bad guy, but he kinda seems like he wouldn't be beyond peeping in on her undressing.
personally, i find the potential catastophe in new york tacky.
my husband thinks the little boy's dad was the creepy black guy in the bar who the cop was looking at. |

my husband thinks the little boy's dad was the creepy black guy in the bar who the cop was looking at. | Right, I know he didn't mean to "kill" her, but didn't he leave her for dead after noticing the (apparent) extent of her injury...? Or did they just cut away from his reaction and the next thing we saw was her on the table in the morgue so we don't really know. To me it looked like, "Oh crap, what happened, I've got to get out of here!!" on the guy's part.
YES, Mr. Ex-Dynasty is so ick... Is it worse or better that he's her adoptive, not bio-, dad? I was wondering if that was intentional or not... maybe he's directed to act ominous and cold and inscrutable but the actor can't help injecting a sexual undertone, that's a part of his style. Because with the rape and the pseudo-incestuous thing going on, it's seems like a bit too much sexual targeting for one character in just 3 episodes! Maybe that's an unconscious reason I didn't like that she was raped.
I'm trying to reserve judgment until more is revealed, but yeah, I felt pretty let down that the apparent big event is oh... fiery destruction of America's greatest city! It looked like a nuclear cliche.
I don't think that guy is the little boy's dad, he is way too creepy... I just can't see her with him! And from the way the mom talks about the dad, it seems like he's a relatively "normal" guy, but maybe his evolutionary change was to become a mysterious mind-controlling (or somehow psychic) creep. I wondered, oh maybe he's some kind of DE-evolution, like he's going back to lizard brain so he has no humanlike coherent thoughts for the cop to pick up (but probably not). |

I love Hiro however, he is by far the best. |

| | | Who watched this week? I saw only bits & pieces, but was again startled out of watching the show by an annoyingly contrived moment: Hiro and his friend playing "Rain Man" in Las Vegas-- I could handle it until they actually got in costume.
There's supposed to be a 3-episode mini marathon this Sunday, for anyone who needs catching up (like I do). | |
