This movie does address some pretty important issues, however. Everyone knows that hatred/intolerance/ignorance exists in the USA; but it still was frightening to actually see it brought out of people with such ease. Also, the general apathy toward and incomprehesion of anything foreign is just so SAD. It's good that he was able to show all of this with humour, but sometimes its easier to just not deal with such brutal reality.
The scariest thing in the entire movie, to me, was the Pentecostalist church service. I'm truly shocked that such a religion even exists. |

| | Borat did good in US of A. He earned $26 million. Nice. Not bad considering the film is playing in less that 900 theaters.
So if its not near you now, it will be as they plan to expand it to 2000 theaters next weekend. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061105/...NlYwN5bmNhdA-- |

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. You can't go to that movie and be dissapointed because it is exactly what it claims to be in all its publicity.
I laughed, and I loved Borat the man. |

I was trying to say that's where most of the laughs came from.
Don't get me wrong, I liked it for the most part, but I can't say I "loved it" because something about the delivery just bugged me and I can't exactly put my finger on it. Maybe it's the humiliation aspect - and the portrayal of foreigners.
And I know that he's trying to make a point with that (portrayal of foreigners): In bringing out America's perception of foreigners as boorish/unrefined, he was able to show the ugly and dark side of America (etiquette group, cattle ranchers, gun-store owner, frat boys).
I guess I'm not totally convinced that he realizes (or cares) himself how offensive he's being with the manner he is misrepresenting them.
Personally, I prefer the way people like Rick Mercer and Stephen Colbert do subversive. |

| | | I saw this film yesterday, what can I say. It was disturbing! especially the fight between him & Azamat- OMG I screamed in horror. But it was hilarious at the same time.....it's not about how outrageous the Borat persona can be, but how he EXPOSES consistently people's blatant and not-so blatant prejudices & misconceptions. For example, yes he brings his shit in a bag to the dinner table at a "high-class" southerners dinner, which was quite a base act, but it clearly demonstrates the PERVASIVE IGNORANCE of the Southerners attending the dinner that they accept that fact that someone (supposedly) from Kazakistan would not know how to operate a toilet. Just because he is not american and from somewhere they've never heard of.
The Borat character slyly exposes people's biases, by appearing to be biased himself. It's brilliant, but also disheartening because nearly everyone he encounters demonstrates they have a fucked worldview, be it homophobic, anti-semitic, misogynistic, even murderous, or just plain fucking ignorant & stupid. Those sickening frat boys made me cringe for America. Their attitude is not rare. I've heard a criticism of the Borat film, in that "how dare he expose America in the twilight of it's reign as a dying world superpower". And I say why the fuck not, us bloodthirsty warmongering insular yanks deserve the coming dark age ahead. That's the subtext of the Borat film.
I can't wait for the DVD so I can see all the extras, deleted scenes, etc.
Very nice! |
