| | | Anselm Kiefer My friend Sean and I are currently poring over his work. He went to an art exhibit and brought me back pictures:
But I am a much bigger fan of his sculptures:
I don't know if anyone here has ever heard of him or not, but he's worth looking into.
Post your favorite Anselm Kiefer art!

| | | Oh GOD how I love Anselm Kiefer-I based quite a lot of my art project last year around his techniques. I love his landscapes and photography-it's all so bleak and dark, but not in an indulgent way-they are just plain and subtle, but massive and monolithic at the same time. Fantastic. I always partner his work with Auerbach's, in my head. Brilliant uses of texture. |

The first picture, I'm not sure what it's called, I love the way he uses perspective and the bland hues. It makes you question what the picture is actually supposed to represent (i.e - a map or an empty field).
Post pictures!!
And I haven't seen anything by Auerbach but I will definitely check him out, thanks.

"Kiefer took this photograph of the French actress Catherine Deneuve in 1969 while he was watching François Truffaut's film "La Sirène du Mississippi" (Mississippi Mermaid). The movie is about a deceitful mail-order bride who comes to America to marry a plantation owner. Kiefer was amused by the idea of portraying Brünnhilde, the typically corpulent, armored heroine of Wagner's opera, as the thin, sexy French movie star."
"This work shows a 1969 photograph of Kiefer wearing a crocheted dress and surrounded by a mass of opaque-black painted scribbles. The artist made a number of works based on similar self-portraits."

| | | i'd forgotten how much i liked anselmn kiefer! i studied his work when i was doing art a-level a few years ago, with wire and all-sorts attached
i remember seeing an incredible 3-d sculpture/painting at one of the tates. i like the brutality of his brush-strokes..and i'm always a fan of subdued colours & thickly applied paint
i think i prefer his paintings to sculptures, but it's probably because i am not clued up on sculpture in general
