The male body I think can be breathtakingly beautiful. Like the female body, its beauty is obviously very much in the eye of the beholder. This thread made me think of movies where the man is strictly the sex object, not the woman. The first two to spring to mind were 'Thelma & Louise' and 'The Piano'.
Remember Brad Pitt's delectable torso on display whilst Geena Davis wears a boring and unsexy night-gown, even as they're having sex? That scene definitely 'worked' for me. I know straight guys as well as girls who found that sequence erotic.
As for 'The Piano' ... UGH! I couldn't believe how atrocious the casting was in that movie. The little girl was brilliant. What's her name again? Anna Paquin? Holly Hunter did an admirable job I guess. But oh my God, the rest!
Jane Campion (don't get me wrong; I LOVED 'An Angel At My Table') thought it would be interesting to create an erotic drama where 'The Gaze' is all the woman's, and the man the sexual plaything. The woman, played by Holly Hunter, has some romantic feelings for the man, but there's no mistaking that its his body that has her mesmerized. (I could get started on the subplot of her vague interest in the genitalia of her evil and apparently completely boring husband, but I won't.)
There's 'erotica' aplenty, and presumably it's meant to arouse female viewers somewhat. Yes, it's the woman's own intense sexuality, coming from within herself, but it's also clear that she's a discerning gal. Her middle-aged husband, Sam Neill, is very unattractive to her. So who did Jane Campion cast to play the Adonis, the Eros, the eye-candy whose nude body we see (and are maybe meant to like seeing) again and again?

I'm sorry; I know it's shallow but I read an interview with Harvey Keitel recently that said, and I quote, 'The Piano' is "most women's all-time favorite sexy movie". I can't believe 'most women' found the sight of Keitel sauntering around nude with his rather large naked ass directly facing the camera so often attractive. I mean, when you think of all the beautiful young guys there were around in Hollywood in the 1990s ... It's tragic. | I TOTALLY know what you mean. Yes it's shallow but if you are making a sexy movie or a movie with lots of sex, it wouldn't hurt to have a beautiful cast. It's like that Madonna movie, Body of Evidence. It's a lame movie but I've always said that one of the reasons that movie is so bad is the casting of Willem Dafoe opposite Madonna. Willem is a great actor but he's ugly!!!!!!!!!! he's unattractive. When actors like Dafoe or Robert Redford or Clint Eastwood are STILL getting cast in 'heart-throb' male lead roles, personally I can at least think, 'Well, these are Hollywood, mainstream films with male producers/directors who are probably also the best buddies of Redford/Eastwood/Richard Gere [take your pick].' But it drove me CRAZY in 'The Piano' because Jane Campion is meant to be so 'avant-guarde', and her films are meant to appeal to women. WHY cast a 50-something Harvey Keitel in the role of the sex pot - especially since there's NO mistaking that that's what the role called for? When it gets to the point where Holly Hunter ignores her little girl for hours and hours on end, purely to ogle and fondle Harvey Keitel, you really have to wonder what the fuck is ailing her. Of course I don't think a mother shouldn't be permitted to be human and get bored with her maternal duties from time to time. In the movie it doesn't quite get to the point where you see her child as the victim of neglect, but you do see her getting very upset at being ignored by her mum so much of the time ... ignored, all for Harvey Keitel's boring and (yes, asexual) old ass? I mean, come on. Give us somebody young and gorgeous, and you'd at least understand this woman's motivation!
Sorry, but at my uni recently, we had to watch 'The Piano' and people were raving about it being daring and provocative, sexy, making a brave feminist statement and it drove me up the wall. (Aside from Harvey Keitel, Holly Hunter plays a mute - but she's meant to be powerfully sexual and inspired. I get the symbolism, but where's the 'brave feminism'?)
Okay. That's my "Piano" rant, all done.
I've never seen 'Body of Evidence', but I've heard a lot about it. Even though people have laughed about the sex scenes, they COULD have worked with a more attractive actor, yes. Poor Maddy copped so much flack for that movie, but Defoe alone could ruin 'erotic' scenes in any movie, for reasons that are painfully obvious.
Glad you didn't take offense to the Valerie Solanas comment. I find her writing very funny and amusing so it wasn't intended to be rude.

I remember watching it with a friend, and she was saying, "They've scripted this to make HER the aggressor [meaning, Kate demands to pose nude while Leo draws her]. Why can't they take it further and now have HIM posing without his shirt for HER?"
She was joking, but she was right.
Granted it would have made the whole movie seem even more absurd (if possible), but the director could have found a way around it. Take that ridiculous sex scene in the car. All you got to see of Leo was his face and arms, briefly. They could have given the audience a few perve shots of Leo, seeing we got some of Kate.
I've read that the director, James Cameron, thought Leonardo looked far too puny and boyish as it was, not realizing - DUH! - that of course this was part of his appeal. (The poor guy, Leo that is, has no where near the same fan-base since he tried to look 'manly'. I know he's a lot older now, and therefore IS more manly, but it's a look he cultivated, well before it was necessary. I suspect a little botox helped him out during 'The Beach'. He should have stuck with that, and kept all that facial hair out of his future films. It doesn't suit him.)
This (the 'Titanic' business) wasn't anything I felt 'offended' by, but it's a classic example of seeing this thread topic in practice. |

He pissed off his family recently, claiming publicly to have a gay uncle. Bizarrely, the 'uncle' claimed not only that he wasn't gay, but that he wasn't even Heath's real uncle. It was an odd story.

I am a mere 22 years old here, but I've had it bad for Harvey and Willem since my teen years. | see, i feel like to some point almost every movie that brad pitt is in is like this. to some degree theres always this "oooooh look at brad pitt he's the SEXIEST MAN EVER women are wanking at this VERY MOMENT he's the best and the hottest look how godly he looks!!!' thing. it basically eclipses anything else that the film could have going for hit, or his character.
