hmm wasnt going to see it because the reviews from the reviewers i like here have said its self-important pretentious shite. Might see it anyway seeing how many oscars it is going to win.

I wasn't too uncomfortable with it... well, maybe a little. Far worse was the scene in The Squid and the Whale where the little boy is wanking in the library and wipes his hands on the books. It was more graphic, and really shocked me and made me nervous when I first saw it. I don't think I'm shockable now... Ice cold.

Dig For Fire - it got a good review in the Observer this weekend from their arts editor. I agree with him.

the mexican maid's story was over the top, but the actress saved it. the japanese deaf girl character was amazing. that acress deservved an oscar. she was so good in that role and conveyed so much through her actions and facial expression. i know she signed and wrote, but most of her performance wasnt verbal. i loved her.

i think its quite hard to connect with a movie where the director is obsessed with throwing every possible obstacle their way. after 30 minutes its like 'well, you know its not going to get better, so why the fuck should i care for these characters?'.

the acting was amazing though, but i felt the story was really lacking (too similar to his previous movie, 21 grams).

i certainly dont get all the rave reviews it has gotten, it was only a bit above average imo.
I agree with everything here. For me it was like the movie Crash (which I disliked more) in that the selection and telling of each story seemed too forced. Each movie read to me like an essay for which the thesis is something like "we are all human and we therefore should get along, but we have isolated ourselves from each other." And in order to support the thesis the writer/director selects only examples that prove his thesis in an extreme manner to the point that everything else is forgotten and the examples seem over the top. Personally, I appreciate more subtle views of the unfortunate sides of life, but I just seem to have a problem with movies like this.

I thought some of the images were beautiful (Amelia's red dress against the blue desert sky and pale yellow sand), and the acting was very good (ALWAYS love Cate), but it didn't move me much at all.

I really didn't like this film. It was okay. I really like Adrianna Barazza, and of the nominees, I wanted her to win the Oscar.

I'm just over these whole everyone is different but we're all the same on the inside movies. We get it.

I shouldn't be peeking in this thread as I just rented it today, but I'm too lazy to go watch it. Is it really as depressing as everyone is saying?

I didn't really find it depressing, just unfortunate. They should have called the movie A Series Of Unfortunate Events.

yeah, I just finished watching it. Not overwhelmingly depressing, but obviously I felt really bad for the Moroccan father and the Mexican nanny. I felt like kicking the shit out of the police officer/whatever who told her that getting a lawyer would do her no good.

Anyway, I started the damn movie too late and now it cut into my DH, so I'm waiting for that to stop taping now...

Her snatch stole the show, for sure.

Overall, it proved to be quite the let down. I was expecting a whole pie and only got a slice. And it was stale.

i didnt really feel the whole "we are one; lets hold hands around the world" vibe of it. i guess that was part of the point though. i just didnt feel hit over the head with it like i did when i watched crash (which i hated).
i felt it was more about these specific people and what they were going through. i was glad that they werent going through the EXACT same thing in each sub-story. i hate the tagline too, but i hate most taglines.

"pain is universal, but so is hope."

I just got around to watching it. Hmm... what to think. Well I just adore Cate Blanchett more and more every time I see her. I'm glad she didn't die. Aaaand although I really liked Chieko's story, I don't know that it had enough of a link with the rest of the movie? It sort of seemed like a little movie on its own maybe. Umm what else. Oh isn't little Elle Fanning adorable. I think I'll have to watch this again sometime and pay attention more, because I think it was quite great but I wasn't fully in to it at the time.

I finally watched this like 2 weeks ago.
I actually liked it quite a lot.
It was completely different then I was expecting. I did get sick of seeing that chick's crotch all the time, but it was an effective way of showing how she was losing it.

I only really enjoyed the Japanese girl section and the Mexican nanny section. Brad and Cate were boring. The movie seemed so relentlessly negative without any real resolution at the end. I kinda liked it, but I don't think I'll be seeing it again. I prefer 21 Grams.

why do you think it didn't have a resolution? I thought it was pretty clear.

Mexican lady = deported
Japanese girl = finally getting somewhere emotionally, talking to her dad again. (I got the impression they never really talked besides to the police when her mom died) them hugging/crying etc.. at the end made me think they were finally going to talk to one another and start to move on.
Brad & Cate = she lives, they talked about the death of the baby, she is working on forgiving him - closer now then she has ever been.

I watched this last week.I hadn't understood the ending but thinking about it I realized that it was ok....There's no possible fairy tale's end, they should do some real end...like in the real life.
(something like the end of "Closer")

the japanese deaf girl character was amazing
