Definitely alter your cat whether it stays indoors or not. Even if it stays indoors, the male ones will be more likely to mark their territory around your home if they're not neutered (and actually, a lot of unaltered females are known to pee in random places too) AND the pee from unaltered pets is soooooo much more pungent than the pee from the altered ones.

Btw, if you live in Southern California, this kitten and his bro who looks just like him were abandoned at my work's front doorstep several weeks ago and they still need homes (we prefer one cause they really love eachother). Our hospital director named them Laurel and Hardy but the kennel staff secretly calls them Cheech and Chong. They were born on July 4th.

where do you live? i have never heard of giving cats birth control pills!

everyone has given good advice i think. if you're working a lot i would say definitely get two cats. while cats don't need constant attention and walking and so on like dogs do, they are social creatures and they do like having company.

once you've had them neutered and they've had all the injections they need as kittens, they're not that expensive to care for. they need annual booster injections (don't know where you live, larsen, or if it's the same there, but i imagine it'll be similar) which aren't that expensive considering they only need to be done once a year. cat food isn't that expensive and neither are cat toys (although tbh i wouldn't get too many toys, they'll probably just end up playing with a shoelace or a bit of twig anyway )

i personally think pet insurance is a bit of a waste of money. we're probably getting kittens soon and my boyfriend is adamant that we need pet insurance too. i disagree. my cats that live at my mum's are about 13 years old now and if my mum had had them insured their whole lives, we wouldn't have had to take advantage of that insurance even once. granted, we've been incredibly lucky in that they've had no health problems and have only needed neutering and then their annual booster shots, but still. IMHO it's better to put money aside, maybe in a separate bank account, for cat-related emergencies. that way you've got money in case something happens to the cat, but it's still your money rather than the insurance company's.
