I'd love to see a recent photo, see how he looks now. | First, thank you! I'm really bad at bringing the camera to the barn so I don't have any great pictures from recently. But I will take some and post them soon! Unfortunately he is still pretty skinny, although he does look a lot better. Vet has checked him out twice, and says for all my efforts he should have gained more weight by now. He gets the 2x daily feeding of grain all my fatties get, hay and grass grazing, bucket of alfalfa hay cubes, a "complete" feed that can be used as a subsitute for all this roughage but is being fed in addition, iron supplement, and an extra high-calorie supplement. This is all daily. We suspect there's something going on in his digestive system. He is going on an equine digestive conditioning system called SUCCEED. He will be on it for three months.
On the plus side he has a great appetite so as soon as we get his tummy working a little better we should see more improvements.
What really PISSES ME OFF is that all this is from neglect. Horses don't get to that weight overnight. My other three are fat and happy as can be, and (knock on wood) I haven't had vet bills like these, EVER. It is likely that his digestive system wouldn't be so messed up if it wasn't for the starvation and neglect. He was also very head shy, wouldn't let me touch his face where there was evidence of an old traumatic injury. Makes me think people were involved in this misfortune of his. This also left him handicapped--while he is my oldest, he's really not that old but is missing some teeth and food falls out one side of his mouth. We wet it so it's easier for him, and he's adapted to his disability quite well. But it doesn't help as we want him to be consuming all he can.
But here is a timeline of some of his progress:
First day I owned him. This is at the auction yard, literally minutes after he was legally mine. Took 1/2 hour to catch him. I was like, c'mon, coming with me is the best decision you can make right now. You don't wanna stay with the meatman! As you can see, he is filthy and scared. He was even skinnier after we shedded out that winter coat.
Couple weeks later. His eyes look so much brighter and he seems to be at ease. For weeks there was endless hair coming off him (white fluff on the ground):
On a rainy day, just relaxing:
Grazing, more recently. And finally beginning to fill out, getting the start of a belly! Go away, pinched-in waist!:

Yes, Kenny is albino. They're not hard to come by at all, there was actually two albinos in Kenny's litter.

| | | No, there's no need really because I have three boys. I kind of wish they were though, so I could throw a few little girls into the mix without worrying about babies hah.

| | The bigger of the two are brothers, and I got the albino one about half a year after those guys. I introduced them right away and they always had play time together, but until Kenny was big enough he lived in his own cage. When I say big enough, I just mean that I have a ferret cage with far spaced wires, and he could fit thought when he was a baby.
I would love more rats, but I don't really have the space at the moment. Maybe for one more. I want girls
