question about skipping your periods (pill method)

i had heard in the past that if you continue taking your pills when your period are due, you won't had them.

my question is, if you do that for a special event (vacantion, ect), and take a one week break the next week to have your period again, will it have effects on your fertility ? i mean, is it possible that it's going to be a little bit less safe to have unprotected sex?

i'm confused

first, this really has to be done with monophasic pills. sometimes it'll work with tri-phasic, but your'e really gambling there.

second, it may not work at all and have your period anyhow, a longer one, a shorter one, continuous spotting, etc. these things work best if you get them into a cycle themselves, rather than just trying before a particular event.

third, yes it could affect your fertility likelyhood with your pills if you continue for an extra week and then skip to cause a withdrawal bleed. it might not, but it can for some affect the effectiveness of their pills. again, this isn't so much an issue with monophasics, but absolutely it will throw off the effectiveness of tri-phasics. best thing to do is simply follow through with the second set of pills as though everything was normal and just wait for your next withdrawal bleed to come around normally.

and of course, if not sure what you're on or if they'll work well for you in this call you doctor.

I don't know if it's the same for different types of pills, but I've always been told that if I want to stop my period coming when it's due, I should just run two packs of pills together - so basically miss out a period, rather than delaying it by a week.

The pill I was on before being pregnant (logynon) was one which had 3 different strengths throughout the 21 days. For me to delay I period I had to take the last 10 pills in the next pack, not the complete pack as that way it didn't work.

my doc has said in order to skip a period for a month, it's perfectly fine to do so and to do so by starting the next month's pack of pills immediately after the 21st pill, instead of taking the sugar pill for the last 7 days of that cycle.

this is on ortho-tricyclen btw.

tNot taking the break between pills is super dangerous and can cause a lot of medical problems in your future.

BC in any form is basically a slow poison and can really screw up your system.

It's safe to run two packs of 21 pills together with no break between, but you should have the normal 7 day break after the 42 days and let yourself have a period. As long as you take the pill every day for those 42 days without fail, you shouldn't have any spotting or bleeding and you'll continue to be protected throughout the whole time.

I'm not sure what you did. It sounds like you took a full pack of 21 days and followed that up with 7 further days from a new pack, and then had the period/break? Then you'd be left with a part-used pack of 14 days, yes? I think it depends on what you did next. If you discarded the 14 and took a whole new pack of 21 days, you would have been protected. If you took the 14 days and then had another period, that might be a bit sketchy. Overall, the risk of pregnancy probably isn't too high. But it might be higher than it is usually.

Don't listen to that loon a few posts up. Birth control is not a slow poison and it will not harm you to run packs together, as long as you do usually allow yourself to have a period regularly.

yes thats what i did ! first i wanted to skip my period for a month, but then i felt so "full" i decided to have my period the next week. i took pill from my emergency package so after my period i had to start a new one... but i don't think that's the deal. anyway that was in may. i had my period in june but not in july.. i only had sex once, the week after experimenting with my pills but i heard so much stupid stories about having fake periods and still being pregnant or anyway.. but i don't think i am. it's good to know though how to use this method the right way, next time !

that's absolute bullshit. it is perfectly safe to take the pill without breaks for years. in fact this is offered as treatment for several medical (gynaecological) problems.

any gynae or other MD will agree with this.

the only thing it may do is cause some harmless spotting/light irregular bleeding.

of course if someone finds themselves doing it a lot it may be easier to try something like depo provera instead

^^^ i'm sure you're right. i've read in a magazine that a lot of doctors recommend doing this to their clients that doesn't want to have their period. and they're going to release a pill in the future that ends the periods.

Cherry r u sure? I am on the generic OrthoTriCyclen and need to skip my period next week - we are cruising to Mexico. I want to try this method and my doc is away. If your docs info is correct than I am going to try it and keep my fingers crossed that it works.
