and then just walk away, and leave them there to think about what a dick they're being.

grief is no excuse.
I said that she would think it, she didn't actually say it to anyone.

oh i definitely agree with chyia. let her know she is loved and you are there for her. that you are there to listen and be the support she needs.

it's so tough. to lose someone without even getting to know them.

The fresh heartbreak was, in a sense, like being in a foreign country; everything seemed alien, brilliant and glinting. It was as if I’d been flayed, so that even the air hurt. When you’re that unhappy, any glimmer of beauty or consolation feels like running into an old friend abroad, or seeing mountaintops through smog. Maybe we mistakenly think we want “happiness,” which we tend to picture in very vague, soft-focus terms, when what we really crave is the harder-edged intensity of experience.

i hope i'm not ever in such a position (to have to deliver that message to anyone)

that happened to my mom when i was 6

a card saying something as simple as "i'm thinking of you" says a lot

That's the whole trouble. You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write "Fuck you" right under your nose.” - J. D. Salinger

definitely do something. send a card. send a gift if you're a close friend. maybe a little photo album or scrapbook so she can document her pregnancy and remember the baby.

i guess you're not close enough to deliver a meal but there are restaurant runner places. people can't cope with the basics like eating when something like that happens. shit, people can hardly cope with preparing food when a live baby is born

this. especially the last part. people need to eat and when this has happened they dont want to go out and they likely wont want to cook. making a dish for them is very thoughtful.
