| | Birthcontrol Shot? I was talking to a friend the other day and she mentioned something about a birthcontrol SHOT rather than pill or patch.
Does anyone know anything about it? What its called, or does anyone use it?
What are the side effects?
She said it can stop your period for quite awhile..thats what Im looking for. Is it new? Safe?
Thanks. |

| | | i get that, what i get is called Nur Isterate. i get it every two months. it doesn't neccessarily stop your periods but it can. i don't know what they would use where you live though, i would go to the family planning clinic and speak to a doctor or nurse there.
i didn't have any mood swings, but it did make my period annoyingly light and last like a week and a half, where normally it's 3 days. really light, too light to use a tampon.
i understand the side effectsa are different on different people so you will have to talk to your nurse
other than that it's very convenient and not painful.

| | Cool thanks! Ill have to ask about it. It sounds interesting. Plus you cant accidentally miss a day of the pill or have the patch show or fall off if you get the shot. |

| | | The one I've always heard of is called depo. I looked into it and decided that I don't want to get it because it seems like it seriously fucks with your hormones. It usually makes your period stop completely, and it also can sometimes make you gain weight. |

| | | i was worried that it would fuck with ym hormones too, i had a friend who got it in high school and she went mental. lol. but the nurse assured me that that would only happen if i had hormonal or mood problems already. but that's why it's important to talk to a nurse or doctor.
i haven't gained any weight since i've been on it, but then i get a different shot to the one you mentioned

I also don't think there's a lot of long term studies on the effects of taking it and the potential effects on your fertility if you discontinue use.
It freaks me out and I'd never take it. patch all the way. change it once a week and put it someplace inconspicuous, like your ass. |

She was in so much pain when she had her depo implant(?) removed that it scared me to death. She had given natural birth to her son, yet was left crying when her implant was removed...no thanks. |

I know of people who have had the depo shots and have had problems with weight gain, mood swings etc, and have had to ride out the side effects, because once its in there, its there for a while. |

| | | my shot, as i said is only 2 months, but then i get Nur Isterate, which i think is mostly only used in south africa, i found that out when i was researching it on the net before getting it.
i think whatever you decide to do, it's important to get all the facts, and all the information first and then make an informed choice.

| | | My sister in law has just come off the contraceptive injections because they gave her mood swings (apparently). Her husband is going to get a vasectomy!
The fact that you get the injection done every 2-3 months means you could try it and if it doesn't work for you, switch to a different method. |

| | | i cannot imagine having to get a shot every 2 or 3 months. that would be awful. im the biggest baby ever when it comes to shot.
i had to get a shot for strep throat. i cried and my ass was sore for like 2 days. it was bad. no shots ever. |

| | | i've been on the depo provera shot 3 different times now, including right now.
never a single side effect except a bit of random spotting the second time i used it.
first time, i was on for about a year and had no spotting, no side effects.
second time, i was on for one shot and had random spotting now and then but no other issues. i just wore a panty liner now and then.
this time, i've been on for one shot so far and no side effects. i've had one short period since on and am currently having a little panty-liner level of spotting.
i LOVE depo provera. it's my absolute choice of birth control and period ending/lessening.
i'm prone to mood disturbances, being bipolar, and depo's never increased my problems.
like any hormonal bc, it's really all about the individual. all pills, patches, implants, and shots (there are three, availability depending on where you are) works great for some and horrid for others. you really just have to test things and find what is and isn't good for you, personally. |

Depo Provera is an injection of hormones. I've had it a few times and have no side effects, and I don't get a period, which is lovely.
