| | | no no i dont meant like that.
i do not look for stereotypes in people i just notice them sometimes. i am very open though, partly because i live in a diverse area and i have grown up with a lot of different cultures.
it does annoy me when i notice a stereotype, sometimes. like i try not to think like that but i can't help it. i think that is always going to stay the same, you know, a feminist wants to kill all men, people who wear black are goth, chinese are extremely intelligent, obese people have no control, etc, just some stereotypes like that.
when people judge on appearance i get upset. its sick. i hate how just because a goth looks different, they must be a "bad kid". i don't like how a girl who is blonde is automatically good in bed.
but i mostly hate these up tight school administrators and parents that are "afraid" of goths. i am not goth and i don't ever plan to be, but i have a lot of friends who are. they like the color black, so what? they look different? isn't diversity a good thing? i go to a private school and the administration has officially banned black shirts from the middle school. at least high school still lets us wear them.
i kind of went off topic, but it is just something that has always bothered me and probably always will. |

i kind of went off topic, but it is just something that has always bothered me and probably always will. | I'm glad to hear that and that's understandable. Personally, I have been able to cut way back on my acknowledgment of stereotypes. I used to notice them a lot, but it wasn't ever that I noticed it because I thought it was true - I just always noticed it because I wondered how that particular person felt (or would feel) knowing that a lot of people looked at them like that.
I know that I'm stereotyped all of the time. I enjoy being smart, but I'm in no way cocky about it and I know what I want in life. Waaay too many times I have been told (by people who later got to know me) that they thought I was stuck up and too picky at first - just strictly because I was sure of my goals in life. I never go around and treat people as though I'm better then them and I never plan to.
On top of that, when it comes to religion (just like everything always does) - I don't believe in god. I don't believe in god like things and I am comfortable with my own feelings and beliefs and am not looking to "be saved". This of course throws people for a loop and starts the stereotypes of "devil worshipping" or "sinner" or even "someone without morals". It's so flippin' irritating... but c'est la vie. |

I'm not actively racist, but there have been times where I have thought something and said to myself, "Why the hell am I thinking like this?" I think I still have a lot of aspects of growing up with a really racist father in the middle of the boondocks to work out of my own head. |

There IS a difference. | These kinds of differentiations lead more to the real hatred, fear, and bigotry of class warfare (keep the under priviledged down). I am a carpenter--very low on your list, I'll bet?

But I don't really think it matters all that much. People white and black have always mistaken money for intelligence. You see white people mistake it all the time in other white people, and then they bow down and lick boots.
The real racism that's going on in this country revolves around public school funding and prison. THAT is what's holding down the poor and minorities.
As far as insulting peoples' cultures based on their race, I think it's fine. If I want to say I hate black church people on some random Thursday after encountering one, I don't see that as racism. If people are going to be dumb enough to gather in one place based on their race (and EVERY race does that), then I'm going to punish them for it. |

| | | I think everyone is probably a little bit racist because unless you grew up somewhere I've never heard about, you grew up in a racist culture. Some are worse than others. The challenge is to keep that in mind and be aware of it so that we can hope to change it.
The problem with stereotypes is that when you see them being acted out, they confirm what you already believed was there. It's circular thinking. People don't tend to notice the times when stereotypes are not being acted out; the times when they are will seem more prevalent in your mind.
A sort of analogy for stereotypes that I think about is science. Although in theory, science is supposed to be bias free, when scientists set out to do some experiment or set out looking for something, chances are they'll find it. It doesn't make them bad people or even dishonest, but as far as I can tell, humans have an amazing ability to see evidence that supports what they already believe and ignore all evidence to the contrary. Unfortunately I'm human so I don't think I'm exempt from that. |

to answer the question, i can be at times. i don't use it as a perpetual mindset to guide my actions, but certain racial stereotypes or presumptions can come to mind now and then...like walking down broadway and knowing that the color purple must have just let out because i see a mass of black people dressed in their sunday best standing on the sidewalk. i don't think it's necessarily a horrible thing to have stereotypes in mind unless you're closing yourself off completely to good opportunities and people on the basis of just skin color. which is a difficult thing, because many people do it unconsciously. i'm sure everyone's been there at least once... | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | |
