| | | baseball intelligence "There are three types of intelligent men: those who learn by reading; those who learn by watching; and those who learn by peeing on the electric fence."
Will Rogers or Mark Twain
Who would be more intelligent: a person who has a theory about baseball; one who has memorized all the personal statistics of the current national league players; or a player who earns $5 million per year after practicing hitting the ball for the 12 years of elementary and secondary school, while achieving a "c" average?
Intelligence: what is it, really? |

Intelligence: what is it, really? | Mike Mussina wins. He makes like $19mill a year as the Yanks ace, and he went to Stanford for Economics.

You like baseball? I wouldn't think there were many baseball fans on KR. |

With the way my team is playing right now I'm trying to forget about baseball.
They're not playing like defending world champions. |

He's a very intelligent person and he really takes education seriously.
An idiot would be a person whom turns down a $25 mill contract. Not one that takes it, and then earns it.

They're not playing like defending world champions. | The Sox still pwn. The Tigers are tough right now, but I don't think they can hold out. No worries, you'll get in somehow. |

Earnings means zip. Plenty of people have earning power which is simply not backed up by success in any other field other than that very specific area in which they earn. Of course, theories are meaningless unless they can realistically be applied and therefore falisified (the ultimate test of any theory - the ability to withstand itself).
Toodles.

Toodles. | What about creative intlligence? I knew a guy with water on the brain and for the most part a retard but he was somehow a musical genius. I think it's more complicated. |

| | | In what way was he a musical genius?
Did he have an extreme talent for reproducing musical score? Did he have a talent for being able to compose effective peices on the fly? Could he, after some work, produce a novel piece of work that was effective in communicating the intended feeling and context?
Regardless, all three situations mentioned are already covered by my definition. It is actually precisely the application of intelligence, of whatever type, to the situtation that most suits that intelligence, that makes the definition of intelligence so hard to reify in a way that makes its limits and strengths easy to put into a tangible scalar framework.
In essence, intelligence is hard to clearly and unambigously define due to the huge array of areas that it's possible to display intelligence in.

| | | Yeah I see what youre getting at. I just wonder how it's possible to come up with any ubiquitous definition of intelligence when a guy, like the one i mentioned, can be so intelligent and so not intelligent at the same time. |

why do you always have to quote someone, Paladin? can't you just come up with your own ideas? "intelligence: what is it, really?" oh, brother.....how deep. let's all discuss the depth to which intelligence is mined. and isn't Palladin just the most intelligent for coming up with this brilliantly origanl topic. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
