Texas School District Bans Grillz
Updated 12:04 PM ET July 11, 2006
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The school district here has expanded its dress codes to include mouths _ and earlobes.
Students may no longer wear mouth jewelry known as "grillz" _ shiny teeth caps _ or the earlobe-stretching practice known as "gauging."
"The district is having to respond to fads because they've become distracters or a safety hazard for those around them," said Malcolm Turner, the district's executive director of student services.
The nearby Irving, Grand Prairie and DeSoto districts also ban grillz, and some also address gauging _ the process of placing increasingly large items in the ears to stretch the lobes.
But students said the body modification is simply self-expression.
"Really, a grill is just like an earring. It's fashion," said junior Devonte Wright, 16.
But school officials said they hoped to teach students that life would require them to follow specific regulations in specific settings.
"We want to instill in them a sense of modesty and a sense of community," said school board trustee Gloria Pena. "We're preparing them for the work force, and in the work force there are rules."

Gots ta get ma gr'llaz on.
So the grill is going the way of the slap bracelet... I'd like to see them try and ban gauging in canada, about 89% of french-canadian youths have something larger than a breadbasket stuffed in there... And when it comes out they're all like little vadges attached to the face! |

| | I went to school in texas, the dress codes for most public schools are completely outrageous. No showing your tummy, not long hair on boys, no short shorts, no super baggy pants, no gang colors, no bandanas, no offensive clothing, they'll decide what's offensive not you, no deep v's. Why they don't use uniforms I'll never know.
If they spent half as much time concentrating on curriculum and teaching practices, they'd probably have some of the best students in the country.
But no they would rather have their students looking appropriate, in an american history class taught by a football coach who could give a shit about teaching. Though I guess it wasn't too unusual, everyone watched lonesome dove in class because it was a good representation of what 'western life' was like....right?? |

I can't quite work out how the ear plug things can be a safety hazard. Unless the ear lobe retained enough elasticity for them to fire out at will. I'm having a mental image of some guys playing ping pong.
As for the grillz, they need to be banned for crimes against fashion anyway. No harm done there.

If anyone had tried to keep me from wearing so much silly eye makeup in high school, I probably would have taken them to court, just on principal. But when I went to my 10th reunion, and I had to wear the name tag with my senior picture on it, that hurt.

Yep, history, bio, government, geography all taught by coachs. Most could give a shit, they just did their football paper work during the class. I never understood why they just don't teach phys ed. It's a little silly when a teacher asks a class of high school seniors what a monarchy is and half the class has a blank face.
What's really un fair is that honor students get actual teachers and read at the appropriate level, and actually learn! Bah!
Oh, and back on topic, the 'grillz' and gauges were most likely banned because, a) someone tried to steal the mouth piece and there was a fight or b)someone got harassed about the gauge and there was a fight. |

| If I were the school district, I would not try to pull any of that safety hazard crap. I would just cite the fact that any stretched piercing smells bad, which is true. YUCKSTERS. |

I never understood why they just don't teach phys ed. | My father used to be a high school teacher, and at one point he coached for the extra money, but his primary job was always history teacher - he never calls himself a former coach, just a former teacher. I think when I was in school (I ultimately attended the last high school he taught in) the coaches were all gym teachers, although I could be wrong since I didn't play anything. But the tail end of the baby boom was in high school when Dad stopped teaching, so I guess there were more kids.
Back on topic, sort of, I either inherited or learned my attitude about letting kids wear whatever they want from my father - although I don't remember any clothes-specific stories, he did tell me how he got in trouble with all the other teachers for letting the kids do their homework on any kind of paper, with any kind of writing implement legible ("Crayon on a brown paper bag was ok, if as long as it was on time and i could read it."), and he used to let them sit on the floor when they asked, because then they find out how uncomfortable that is, and stop asking.

What a good attitude your father had! No wonder you're so well adjusted.
I also inherited a similar attitude from my parents-- I remember my father having a stern discussion with my grandfather. I had just entered high school, cut off all my hair, pierced my eyebrow and poster-painted my walls with smashing pumpkins lyrics. He said
"Yes, it's dramatic and yes it's startling, but when I was his age, all i wanted to do was surround myself with things I love. There is nothing wrong with that."
Besides, it's the age-old problem. The more you tell the kid not to do something, ESPECIALLY when the kid knows that it's not as big a deal as you're making it out to be, the more inclined they will be to do it. |
