I wasn't amazed, but it definitely needed to not compete with the Chinese way of doing things. And it didn't. Took a totally different tack, which was key to not being embarrassed.

I still haven't seen it other than the very very end, pretty much just Beckham passing off the torch and the lighting of the cauldron, followed by a touch of Macca, but I did get to hear a Republican talking yesterday about how it was a boring piece of trash and the only reason any of the liberals had anything good to say about it was because of the NHS parts. So that's lovely.

Which immediately puts one in mind regarding Mitt Romney recently *****ing about how the NHS made his son wait a "six whole weeks" for a colonoscopy when he was living in Britain in 1995. Funny how Romney didn't mention that at the time his son was 19 and not a categorically high risk for colon or bowel cancer, nor was he in acute distress at the time but "slightly uncomfortable and concerned", nor did Romney mention the fact (much less appreciate) that his U.S citizen son was actually being SEEN on the NHS rather than be made to pay privately. I somehow doubt if this happened to his son in the U.S. that he'd be attending a free clinic, for some reason.

Tangent over, I too am pleased parts of the ceremony managed to **** off the "speak first, think later (if at all)" factions of the rabid right.

The opening ceremony is the only part of the Olympics I ever really make sure to watch.

The torch was very, very good. I don't think anyone will ever top Barcelona, but I was very impressed with the whole thing.

However.

What I was really, really hoping for, was the Queen, grasping on to the side door of an old Routemaster bus, torch gripped in the other hand, as it hit a ramp and was sent flying over the top and lighting it as she went, with just enough time to dust of her gloves and adjust her crown before hitting the track and running over Cameron and Boris who were trying to bike away.

She would have climbed gracefully down from the bus, blew fire out of mouth, and screamed 'LUDI INCIPIANT!' before disappearing in a puff of smoke.
