Hey dad

ok this was a popular show here in the late 80's-early 90's

ACTOR Robert Hughes has denied reports he molested a child co-star on the set of the hit Eighties sitcom Hey Dad.

Earlier, Channel Nine's A Current Affair named the actor, who played the father in the popular comedy series, named Hughes as the actor at the centre of the allegations.

“I am absolutely shocked and surprised at this allegation," Hughes said.

"I categorically deny the allegation."

It never happened. The entire matter is now in the hands of my lawyers.”

Child star Sarah Monahan told Woman's Day last week that a man who worked on the show had fondled her and exposed himself.

Another star of the show, Ben Oxenbould said he had witnessed Hughes inappropriately touching a girl "under 10" who came to see the show being filmed.

SARAH Monahan and former Hey Dad co-star Simone Monahan have detailed extensive new abuse claims against Robert Hughes as more alleged victims come forward.

Buchanan told Channel Nine's A Current Affair tonight Hughes touched her "inappropriately" while giving her a lift in his car, and also revealed Monahan told her at the time she was being abused by Hughes.

The revelations came as police began an official investigation into the claims.

Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec, commander of the Sex Crimes Squad, said today no official complaint had been filed but he expected detectives to interview Monahan soon.

Hughes vehemently denies all allegations.

Monahan - who played Hughes' daughter on the show - has been living in the United States and held an emotional reunion in Sydney with Buchanan before they appeared together on A Current Affair tonight.

Monahan alleged Hughes repeatedly molested her over a period of many years while they worked on the show.

Buchanan told how Monahan said Hughes had exposed himself behind the set.

A Current Affair also aired allegations tonight from two sisters unconnected to Hey Dad. They said Hughes, a family friend, also abused them over several years.

Monahan said she took revenge by indulging in some "method acting" during a scene where she kicked Hughes.

"Every single rehearsal I kicked him in the shins," she said.

Buchanan claimed Hey Dad executive producer Gary Reilly knew about the allegations and ordered her not to repeat them, threatening she would not work in television again if she did.

Reilly has denied ever being told of the allegations.

Monahan said she moved to the US to be further away from Hughes but returned to seek justice.

"I never wanted to come back to Australia again. I knew it had to be done I had to go to the police. So I got on that plane," she said.

Monahan's initial claims, made in Woman's Day, have already prompted another alleged victim, Megan Waters, to say she too was molested by Hughes after meeting him on the set.

Detective Kerlatec said no alleged victims had actually made statements to police so far.

"Our information is based on what's in the media. I've had no direct contact - and neither has anyone else in NSW Police - with any of the victims,'' Detective Kerlatec said.

Since the allegations were aired, a number of people from NSW and interstate had approached police with information.

Detective Kerlatec said he had assigned a group of officers to start collating that information.

"Because of the exposure of this matter, people have made contact who ... may have known someone who may have been a witness, or know someone who may have additional information,'' he said.

"It would be dangerous not to collate that information at this time - at some point in the future if and when an investigation increased there may be a lost opportunity to find that information.''

Detective Kerlatec said police would not be flying out to Singapore, where Hughes now lives, until any alleged victims made formal statements.

He had requested the unedited tapes of media interviews with Hughes, Ms Monahan and other cast members.

Police are still waiting on those tapes.

Detective Kerlatec said he was confident the alleged victims would speak to police this week.

Speaking from Singapore where he now lives, Hughes has protested his innocence.

"I am absolutely shocked and surprised at this allegation. I categorically deny the allegation,'' he said.

Singer Delta Goodrem, who guest-starred in the show, today stressed she was not sexually abused by Hughes.

Goodrem's spokeswoman responded to rumours saying Goodrem's time on the show was "a thoroughly enjoyable and positive experience".

"Delta has fond memories of being on the show and did not witness nor was she affected by any issue associated with the current allegation," she said.

Actor Ben Oxenbould (pictured, right) - who played Ben Hubner - last night alleged he had told the show's executive producer Gary Reilly of Hughes' alleged behaviour after walking in to find Hughes with his hands on a young girl's chest.

"She was up on a chair and he had his hands on her chest, his face was very, very close to her neck and ears," Oxenbould said.

"It was enough for me to go into panic and instinct mode and I grabbed her and said 'Come on, let's go and get your photo taken'."http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/police-move-on-hey-dad-sex-abuse-claims/story-e6freuy9-1225845386119

Hey Dad child star flies home to talk to police

ANDREW HORNERY AND GEESCHE JACOBSEN

March 27, 2010
FORMER child star Sarah Monahan is expected to make a formal statement to police on Monday, almost two weeks after accusing her on-screen father Robert Hughes of abusing her as a child on the set of hit sitcom Hey Dad!

Woman's Day, which first published the allegations, plans more coverage of the story in Monday's issue. This week the magazine flew the US-based Monahan to Australia, having signed an exclusivity contract for $15,000.
Hughes has vehemently denied the accusations and is said to have instructed defamation lawyers. But the barrage of claims from Monahan and others have sparked accusations of trial by media.
The media went into overdrive after Woman's Day's TV stablemate A Current Affair, which had signed its own deal with Monahan, named Hughes as the alleged culprit on Wednesday. ACA is understood to have paid Monahan $40,000.
ACA's executive producer, Grant Williams, said his team had amassed an ''overwhelming'' amount of evidence against Hughes, which it has made available to police, but only after going to air with it.
A prominent Sydney defence barrister said that should criminal charges be laid, ACA's interview with Monahan and co-star Simone Buchanan might have made it harder to allow their evidence to be heard in one trial. Hughes now mainly works as a voiceover artist in advertising campaigns for high-profile companies, including McDonald's, Kellogg's, Colgate and the Discovery Channel.

No need to worry, Woman's Day is on the case!

And at least it isn't Jon English.
