| | | Details of every single member of the BNP posted online From another forum: Quote: bnp membership list BNP membership list leaks online • The Register
The British National Party has lost its membership list - the whole thing has been published online.
The list includes names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of all members up to September 2008. It also includes some people's ages, especially those under 18 - the BNP offers family membership for £40. Many entries also contain more personal comments about jobs or hobbies. That's how we know that that BNP members include receptionists, district nurses, amateur historians, pagans, line dancers and a male witch.
Members have unsurprisingly reacted with outrage. One commenter said: "I'm also on the list, what the f#ck is going on? I could lose my job." Another: "The most shocking thing is some of the comments by the names! God help anyone who is in the army, the pison [sic] service, health care, police officer or a teacher." Several professions in the UK are expected to refrain from party political activities. More outraged racists rightwingers here.
Various senior BNP figures are being blamed on blogs for the leak.
A spokesman for the BNP was unaware of the leak but said: "It wouldn't surprise me if someone has done this, but they'll be in trouble, not just under the Data Protection Act but also for contempt of court - there's an ongoing court case."

| | | You shouldn't join the party if you don't want people to know you're part of it. Serves them all right!

| | | To be fair, if he votes for them, rather than being a member, he wouldn't be on the list.

Originally Posted by RomanNoseJob didn't the news of the world do this with paedophiles and my how we, the liberal left, were outraged then. | Different issues though.
a) they were sex offenders who'd been released from jail (thus served their sentence and shouldn't be punished again), whereas most BNP people aren't going to be jailed for being a member of a racist party, even though they probably should be.
b) the list published included sex offenders of all types, from people who had sex with someone slightly younger than them when they were both very young to big fat ageing disgustobots - in other words, there was no distinction made between crimes we'd all find understandable and ones that we'd all be appalled by (apart from Nina); whereas you've either joined the BNP or you haven't, and since you'd struggle to live to voting age without hearing something bad about the party, and since it would be stupid to join a party (rather than just vote for them) without doing any research, it's reasonable to assume that everyone on the list (excluding children on "family memberships", which are just sick) was subject to more than just a lapse of judgment.
And so on.
I get that there are some similar issues here, and that I'm mainly quibbling semantics. But I'm in the same position I was then: ideologically and morally and rationally I know that it's shit and I wouldn't like it if it happened to me (although I wouldn't hate it as much as they do either), but I'd be lying if I said there wasn't some small part of me that feels like it wouldn't be such a bad thing if these immoral, irrational, unideological cunts got a taste of their own medicine, given that, ya know, they spread intolerance and foist their will on others (or support those who do) as a matter of routine.

| | | but it's not illegal to be a member so why should they expect any punishment? and they definitely could be targeted (lots of orginisations ban members from being employees).
sorry but this smacks of hypocrisy to me. The way to fight them is too expose them for what they believe in. not to launch a personal attack on their members.
another example, imagine america 80-50 years ago releasing names of members of the communist party. They were made out to be equivalents of terrorists, widely loathed by the general public but I'm pretty sure now no one thinks that the way they were targeted by the government was acceptable.

I'd also like to point out that when the BNP move into an area they systematically target anyone they know who will actively combat them. Hence when they tried to gain a presence in my uni town, they first tried to find out who was in relevent student organisations and would turn up and take pictures to make their task easier
good post oph, what I was trying to say but clearer
