| | | Well, that's the BNP's tactics all over. They try and make out that minorities are getting privileges any time someone tries to limit the power of the majority to oppress them, and get votes/members by preying on people's paranoia. They think that because they roughed out a few unrelated policies on the back of an envelope one night that they can pass for a legit party, but pretty much no-one would vote for them solely on the strength of those policies so they're pretty pointless for anything other than creating a veneer of respectability.

So we shouldn't take it into account when considering the morality of this? What about the BNP's plain-as-day connections to the National Front? Is that a trifling irrelevance too?
I get that, on a purely ideological, hypothetical and unemotive basis, it is totally the same thing for anyone to be persecuted for their beliefs. But that only applies in practice if people, like, roll dice or something to decide their beliefs for the rest of their lives. In reality, we have a choice, and we can also choose whether to make that choice or not.

| | And here's one of the repercussions from that list being disclosed:
Police officer suspended over BNP links
ITN News
"A police officer who was one of thousands included in a leaked list of British National Party members has been suspended from duty.
Merseyside Police had been investigating whether PC Steve Bettley was a full member of the far-right organisation. Police officers are banned from signing up over fears it could damage race relations.
PC Bettley returned early from a holiday abroad to help the force with an investigation into his alleged involvement with the far right party.
A force spokesman said: "Merseyside Police can confirm that the police officer subject to an ongoing internal investigation into his alleged association with the BNP has today been suspended from duty."
Earlier, a spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) said: "Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe has reiterated our position that membership of the British National Party is totally incompatible with the duties and values of Merseyside Police. We will not accept a police officer or police staff being a member of BNP."
BNP leader Nick Griffin has said the party will take court action after the leaking of the list."
